Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelea
Angelea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From learning how to make the perfect crispy cannoli dough with one grandma, to painting the yellows in the flowers around me with another grandma, I have always had a deep love of noticing beauty and cultivating creativity with those around me.
I still enjoy laughing with my Italian grandma over which cousin has the rockiest relationship, and I cling to the stories of my artistic Portuguese grandma’s life before she immigrated to America. Sunday dinners after church still revolve around Mexican-Italian-Portuguese foods, cousins running around, and friends laughing with joy at the mess of it all.
The heart of my family, hearing my friend’s laughter, and cherishing these beautiful moments is one of the firm foundations of my life. I believe these are the foundations of most of our lives. So, when deciding what lifelong career path I would take, I realized it had to revolve around these same foundations: love, family, and the artistry of simplicity. At the age of sixteen, I made a life changing decision to embark on a new creative outlet, and I bought my very first camera—a canon rebel.
Like cooking or painting, it took me awhile to understand the “flavors” of a good shot and the “strokes” needed to compose a balanced photo. In time, though, I began to pair the knowledge of camera work with the simple moments of love that I had been used to, and I began to see what it meant to be a creator in my very own space.
To say that I am grateful to own a business that directly captures the simple moments we share with the people that we cherish, is an understatement. Meeting new people, hearing their stories that are similar or different to mine, and documenting the same kind of love that I see in my own life moves me to an authentic smile every photoshoot.
Witnessing newborns cling to their mom’s touch, seeing couples embark on the journey of life together, watching the newness of life that follows a tender prayer, and recognizing looks of love are all small, yet most fulfilling, moments that I have gotten to capture.
As I sit at home and edit my photos, I am thankful for not only the foundations of my family, but for the foundations of families all around Kansas City. Each and every moment that is frozen in time by my camera comes from the foundations of love that we have all passed down from generation to generation. I wouldn’t trade this job for the world, and I am thankful for the traditions of love that keep our families and this city a moving piece of art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are many obstacles that accompany owning a business. Every business owner runs into the idea that they are not talented enough, will not grow enough, or are lesser than their piers. I fight these thoughts on occasion, but the particular blessing that comes from doing a creative field is that your gifts will never be the exact same as someone else. There will always be people that see your talents and desire your work for reasons you may not even know. Like any artists, you may not be the most well known, but it does not take away from the particular beauty of your piece. Not every business will blossom at the same speed, but in time each one will bloom.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think of my work as capturing the heart of simplicity. I do not have all of the equipment, lights, or even knowledge that many renown photographers have, but I use my camera to capture the love that I can see in the small things. Eye smiles, hand touches, laughter, blur, will all be seen in my photos.
I am not interested in becoming the biggest photographer in KC or beyond. I am interested in my clients stories and documenting the artistry of their love. Some photographers are like culinary chefs, while others are like grandma’s home cooking. I like to think of myself like the latter.
