Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Musfeldt.
Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was a photojournalism major at The University of Missouri and followed my now husband to Kansas City after school. I freelanced for different magazines before eventually starting my own business in 2006. It wasn’t until I was approached to photograph a wedding that I realized how much I loved it. It surprised me how much shooting a wedding mirrored documenting a news story. From the fast-paced shooting to lighting challenges, you have to be constantly thinking about the best way to tell the story while being technically proficient. Fifteen years later, I have built a business documenting life moments and telling the stories of wonderful couples, graduating seniors, and growing families.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think anyone that starts a business has a smooth road. In the beginning, I was fresh out of college with absolutely no idea how to run a business. I had a degree in photojournalism which taught me everything I needed to know about photography but did not prepare me for how to start and run a business. There were so many moving parts and it was overwhelming to navigate marketing, bookkeeping, taxes, post-production, etc. I credit so much of my success to my husband and my parents. My husband continues to believe and support my dream and I couldn’t do this without him! My dad had a very successful marketing career and was instrumental in helping me find ways to get noticed. He challenged me to think outside the box and always keep trying new ideas. My father passed away last summer and I will be forever grateful for his love and support. Needless to say, challenges never really go away, they just change as you grow. Although I have an established business, I now have 3 little kids that have directly affected my time management and also the way I approach projects. There will always be obstacles, you just get better at hurdling them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a visual storyteller capturing weddings and portraits in a genuine and unique way. I’m known for my use of light to capture emotional and creative perspectives when documenting weddings and family photos. I also take a lot of pride in my professionalism and client relationships turned friendships! I aim to showcase what makes people laugh, smile and cry. I want people to feel moved when they see their images and see details or moments they didn’t notice during the session.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the small-town feel in a big city. It’s easy to get around downtown with less traffic and congestion but still so much to do with amazing restaurants, museums, art galleries, and attractions. I’m originally from Colorado so I naturally miss the mountains but The Flint Hills will have to do.
