Today, we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Bermudez.
Hi Alyssa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Hi, my name is Alyssa Bermudez! I am an office manager at a local State Farm agency in Kansas City. I just entered my 7th year with State Farm and nine years of working in insurance overall. My goal is to open my local agency under State Farm, hoping for 2025!
My insurance journey started in 2015. I had been working two jobs at Oak Park Mall and wanted to find my career. I didn’t have a college degree and was struggling financially. I took a big leap and studied vigorously for two weeks (I even had to quit one of my two jobs) I took my insurance test for property and casualty and got exactly what I needed for a passing score.
Today, I am a proud and engaged homeowner who has accomplished so much since 2015. I cannot stress enough that I came from nothing and worked my way into a stable career with NO college degree. I want other people to know there’s so much opportunity out there, no matter who you are.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have definitely had my struggles, but that makes it so worth it because of where I am today. I started off with little money, barely making it by, and even had to get food from local food shelters. There were even days that I had to ask my boss for gas money to get to work.
Today, I can confidently say I am secure, but I will forever be humble because I know that it took so much to get here. Insurance is also all about sales; that’s how I make money. But I am not going to sell something to someone just to make a buck. I sell from the heart and truly want to make a difference.
I only sell what my customer needs and I help discover those needs by asking them questions. That being said, starting off, I did have slow months in sales until I found my niche. I almost gave up a few times, but I’m so glad I stuck it through!
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am proud to say that I work for an agent under State Farm. My office is one of the only Spanish-speaking offices in our area, so we are able to help out the very diverse community of Kansas City, Kansas, and surrounding areas.
I specialize in a little bit of everything! I help people with auto insurance, life insurance, and even claims. I’m not just another auto insurance agent. We truly take care of our clients from start to finish. It’s my goal to always make an impression, so if the inevitable happens, you feel comfortable calling me.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned a lot of lessons in my industry. One of them is to always LISTEN first. These days, too many people listen to communicate but don’t soak in what people are telling them. I always do my best to make people feel heard! Another huge lesson I’ve learned is to find your tribe.
By that, I mean keep people around you that will push you to be the best version of yourself. Not everyone has a supportive family, so finding your tribe of friends is the next best thing! Make sure the people in your circle are the ones you can picture in 20-plus years supporting you and you supporting them!
