Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Mixon.
Hi Alexia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since 2013 I’ve been in the medical field. I worked in many different hospitals and clinics, and throughout that time, I wasn’t as happy as I used to be, and I didn’t love what I did anymore. I couldn’t take my kids to their practices, and coming home late and exhausted, I was stuck and didn’t know what to do. My mom always said she loved how I did my daughter’s hair and threw out how I should go back to what I originally wanted to do, hair! So I toured several schools and finally settled on Paul Mitchell The School Overland Park. I recently graduated in December 2022 and started working at Moonshot Hair Co. I love being able to transform someone and see how they go from a normal go about your daily mood to the happiest of the happy! Growing up, I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit, and this small shop owned by strong, independent women has made me want to open my shop as well, eventually. They have the drive and passion for running a successful business and even bringing in local KC celebrities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I worked and went to school full-time. It has been a challenging road. In the middle of my being in school, I found I was pregnant with my third child; very unexpectedly, my husband co-founded a non-profit, Veterans Community Project, and I had 2 other children under the age of 6. I missed a lot and didn’t see my family very much.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a cosmetologist. I specialize in Hand Tied extensions, vivid colors, and blonding. I am driven to build my clientele and continue my education to better myself. I always have the drive to keep pushing forward. I’m proud of myself for taking an online extension course and practicing so much that I’ve become good at extensions. I love making people happy. I am very outgoing, and I pride myself on my work.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband, Brandonn Mixon. My mom, Becky Hamrick, owner of Bobby Bakers Lounge. My sister, Kylee Hamrick, an esthetician at the Aesthetic Place, has helped me so much through school, and my boss, Brooke Smith. She went above and beyond to make me excited for my future and give me the best job in the world.
