An Inspired Chat with Mikayla Crane of Missouri/Kansas

Mikayla Crane shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Mikayla, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. All day, every day I’d choose this answer. Skills can be learned. Growth can be gradual. Processes can be taught. Integrity is your character and doesn’t just bleed into every area of life- it is the foundation on which your path is BUILT.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I own the most amazing company with an even more amazing team- White Carpet Bride. We are a highly skilled, loving hearted, compassionate, efficient and detailed team of hair and makeup artists that get to serve the most beautiful souls.
What’s something that we consider ourselves different at? In a world full of creatives that keep things close to the chest because they think everything is a proprietary, industry “secret” they’ve formed, we take an opposite approach. We are quite literally, open books. Have a question about how we organize wedding days? just ask! Wondering what would work better for your hair or skin for a particular occasion? We’ll share! Curious as to why or how we apply things and what those products do? Buckle up, because we’ll give you ALL the info!
We genuinely want to share our knowledge so that people can replicate the feelings they have after being glammed. That feeling? The feeling of confidence, gorgeousness, that you ARE special and could also knock ’em dead? Yeah. We want to give that to every one of our clients.
Having been in the beauty industry for over 20 years now, we definitely know that it takes a village to make things happen and consider ourselves truly blessed to be surrounded by likeminded professionals in the KC industry.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Gosh. Probably my mom, to be honest. She was a teacher who chose to homeschool all of us back in the 80’s and 90’s (definitely before it was cool to homeschool haha) and the woman NEVER stopped working at something. All day, she’d be teaching us, getting meals started, helping found homeschooling groups, navigating lobbying for homeschooling rights in Missouri, mending clothing, serving neighbors, volunteering, working in the yard, and the list never stops. To this day, she never sits down unless she’s simultaneously working on a project.
It definitely taught me in leading by example, the importance of hard work, time management and serving others.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Your opinions matter. Your ideas aren’t too fancy. And your standards aren’t too high.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Oh a thousand percent yes. What you see is what you get with me. (It’s actually kind of a running joke with me and my husband.) I don’t have a poker face and do not lie with ANY sort of believability haha. Needless to say, I don’t gamble….
But there’s such a beauty in authenticity. I do think that people throw that word around so easily these days. But I’m being honest when I say who I am in front of a client is really who I am in front of my family also. Being real- that’s just too much work to try and be different around different people and maybe my brain is too small to be able to keep all of that straight lol.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I loved and served like Jesus did. Whole heartedly, selflessly and fully. My life isn’t about me. It’s about using the gifts and talents I have been given to serve others so as to point them to Jesus.
