We recently had the chance to connect with Krista Lakes and have shared our conversation below.
Krista, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of writing and publishing my romance novels, I am learning Japanese sword fighting. I am learning how to use a katana, a naginata, and a tonto (or a sword, a polearm, and a knife). It doesn’t have any usage in my writing yet since I write contemporary romances, but I love the way it changes my mindset and gives me focus.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Krista Lakes and I am a contemporary romance author. I have over 30+ novels available on all major retailers. My stories are mostly modern day Cinderella romances, but they have plenty of spice. I love a good happily ever after and really enjoy banter between my characters, so many of them have a strong romcom feel.
I have a brand new billionaire book coming out at the end of October called “The Billionaire’s Orchestrated Wife” that is about a billionaire hiring a woman to be his wife in order to inherit his company. Of course, what starts out as just business turns into something real, but you’ll have to read the book to find out how they get to their happily ever after!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My husband.
I was always a shy nerdy kid that didn’t want to take up space. My husband made me see that I am beautiful and intelligent. He made me believe all the love songs and makes sure to be my Prince Charming as often as possible. I love the way I look through his eyes- we’ve been together 21 years and he still looks at me the same way he did when we were 19. He sees all the flaws and thinks they make me better.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been several times.
I failed out of medical school. That nearly destroyed me because it was all I had ever envisioned for myself. I have had multiple books that don’t sell that make me want to give up. Mental health is always problematic for artistic people, and I am no different.
Keep fighting. Find a different battle if the one you are in isn’t winnable. Tactical retreats are a valid strategy.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
She is a part of me, but not the whole me.
Krista Lakes is a romance author. She does not have political opinions or health advice. She is usually happy, often sarcastic, always kind, and frequently spicy.
I am all those things too, so she is the real me. She’s just more polished and ready for social media.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
My favorite days are when a book has been out for a while and the reviews are coming in. I have had a couple of books that were absolute fan favorites. (Yours Completely was my best one). I love when I open up my email and have letters from readers telling me their favorite parts of the book. I love hearing that I made them happy for a few hours and that they enjoyed living in a world I created.
Those are the days that have me dancing in my chair. I love it any time someone takes the time to let me know that they enjoyed something I created.
