An Inspired Chat with Cassie Duncan of South KC

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cassie Duncan. Check out our conversation below.

Cassie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up and take some time to drink coffee and do some writing for my comedy. Then it’s off to work because for now comedy doesn’t pay the bills. I get home from work, pet my two cats and have dinner with my girlfriend real quick before going to do comedy whether it’s an open-mic or a showcase.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cassie Duncan and currently I am full steam ahead on achieving my dream of doing stand-up comedy full time. It’s not a quick process but every day I do what I can to build my brand online, promote my shows, and perform on stage as much as possible! There’s never a dull moment in comedy. Whether it’s the conversations you have with a comic on the road or shutting down hecklers, it will always keep you entertained.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
It honestly took thirty years before I had a feeling of power. Coming out as a woman and transitioning was the moment I realized I had the courage to face my biggest fears. After I looked my parents in the eyes and told them I was a woman, no conversation feels as difficult.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
It’s cliche but music. Music has always been there for me. Very early on in my life I read deeply into an artists lyrics and see if I could hang on to any of those words. That lead me to loving artists like Kid Cudi, Slipknot, and Bring Me the Horizon.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. The girl you see on stage or on tiktok is the real Cassie. Sometimes too real. I know some jokes can be hard for my family and close friends to hear.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel the most free I have ever felt. I spent 30 years doing what I felt others wanted me to do. But now I am truly living as the real me. I am a woman and I am a comedian and let me tell you it feels too good to be living authentically to let the downsides bother me too much.
