We recently had the chance to connect with Amber Dawkins and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
I think as a small business owner, if your answer to this question isn’t a resounding YES, you’re not doing it right. I try my hardest to meet my clients’ needs so they walk away completely happy with the end result at a price that feels worth the quality of work done. And since everyone’s vision is specific and unique to them, I also let clients give feedback along the way, from the initial planning consultation to peeking at photos on camera during the session to weighing in on final edits. I value good client relationships and quality end results – so yes, I’d 100% hire myself if I could!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Amber Dawkins and I’m a commercial photographer in Kansas City. My speciality is helping small businesses stand out with quality photo and video content. I like to show your entire client experience in visual snapshots: Who you are, what you do, where your work takes place, and what your final result looks like. Showing your story helps build trust and transparency with potential clients, which in the end, helps sell your services!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom was the one who saw the photography potential early on. Although neither of us ever dreamed this little business would grow to what it has become today, she’s the one who bought a camera and put it in my hands 18 years ago. We’ve learned so much along the way, and I love that she’s still a part of this today. We’re truly a mother-daughter team and the adventures we have doing photography together are so precious to me!
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I wrote my first poem at the age of 7. I still remember it: What makes thunder? What makes lightning? Why does a storm seem so frightening? When the rain falls from the sky, so way up high, deep down inside, there’s nothing to hide, I love you. Simple, but not bad for a young age. I still write to process sad or scary things to this day. Something about organizing my thoughts and dumping them out of my head to rest on paper instead is so cathartic.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that quality time with those I love tops my priority list. We’re already a busy household with the regular school and work events that life brings, but I still won’t hesitate to fill an empty spot on the calendar with a family experience. I want to make sure our kids grow up realizing that sharing life’s adventures with family is one of life’s greatest blessings.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
For me, I’m at peace when those around me seem happy, healthy, and balanced. And a clean house with a lit candle doesn’t hurt either! But on a more serious note, since our world keeps throwing plot twists into everyone’s happiness and health, I seek peace through prayer. The older I get, the more I find myself falling asleep in prayer each night, asking for God’s wisdom, guidance, and protection for myself and my loved ones.
