Adesola Owolabi shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Adesola , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
So many people are battling with mental health problems/challenges behind closed doors, smiling on the outside while breaking on the inside.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Adesola Owolabi, I’m a Nigerian American, and a Creative Artist and Founder of Desola Creations LLC. where I express African culture through fashions, accessories and home decor.
My work is a celebration of African heritage, reimagined through fashion, accessories, and home décor. Drawing deeply from the richness of my culture, I create pieces that are not only visually striking but also steeped in meaning and memory. Every design I craft is a tribute to the colors, textures, and traditions that shaped my identity. This is a modern expression rooted in timeless African aesthetics.
Through bold patterns, authentic materials, and intentional craftsmanship, I aim to bring the spirit of Africa into everyday life. My creations are more than objects; they are conversations about history, pride, beauty, and belonging. Whether worn or displayed, each piece invites connection, evokes heritage, and honors the artistry passed down through generations.
Thank you for joining me on this creative journey, one rooted in pride, purpose and the beauty of African culture.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I once believed there were heights I could never reach. But as an adult, I have come to understand the power of self-belief. Today, I know that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
The most difficult time of my life was during the onset of my mental health struggles. In that moment, someone truly listened, my medical provider and care team. They not only heard my words but also took the necessary steps to ensure I received the help I needed. Their compassion and support became the turning point in my journey toward healing.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to creating mental health awareness in the African community, and I will not stop until these conversations are embraced, valued, and normalized across our communities.
Supporting African mental health means breaking the silence, ending the stigma, and creating safe spaces for healing. Many in our communities still suffer in silence due to shame, lack of awareness, or limited access to care.
I want to normalize conversations about mental health.
I want to encourage therapy, counseling, and support groups.
And also want to invest in culturally relevant mental health resources.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I surrender a situation to God, knowing that in my own strength, I have no power. Trusting Him brings me calm.
