Abrianna Howard of Lee’s Summit on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Abrianna Howard. Check out our conversation below.

Abrianna, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my self esteem up. I grew up with a lot of mental health & home struggles that stripped away my self confidence & worth, so when I got to truly be my own person, I knew I had to do the work to get where I want to go.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Loc & Natural hair specialist. My business practices are structured based on the science behind the hair & scalp alongside taking care of black hair. My business is unique because it’s reintroducing structure and knowledge that has been lost on the clients of this generation. I’m working on an ebook about Locs as well as natural hair care for the people who aren’t able to get in , but still need the education to evolve.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Aunt Gina. She used to always tell me when I was a little girl “I can’t wait to see you blossom. You are going to be so amazing” At the time I didn’t fully understand what she meant. But now as I’m aging and I’m growing and I’m learning. Those are words that are forever in my heart because she saw me during the time when I was very alone & depressed. In those dark times she shared her light with me.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Having a business and how it is ran is a huge reflection of you. My first year having my business is when I decided to stop hiding my pain because I couldn’t hide it anymore. Running a business will reveal everything about you. So I went to therapy, started healing and now I help my clients whenever they’re in my chair by sharing my stories. So they know they’re not alone.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Myself, everyday I am working on the project that is my life. Being a better person, being a better friend, better loctician/stylist, better business owner, having better skills. I see everyday as a new opportunity to be better. Whether I choose to or not is completely on me, no one else.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My unwavering spirit. I have always been someone who carries a lot spiritually. I have an energy that is warm & comforting which is why people always open up to me. They always feel safe with me and that has been my truth for as long as I can remember.
