Aaron Habel of Liberty, MO on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Aaron Habel. Check out our conversation below.

Aaron, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Going to the gym. Getting in 2 to 3 miles on the treadmill and working out on the weight machines and with the dumbbells while listening to music helps me to drop any worries for a bit while working on myself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Aaron Habel and I am a podcaster who focuses mostly on true crime and mysteries across my three shows: Generation Why Podcast, Framed: An Investigative Story, and Marooned: Tales of the Catastrophically Lost. I approach everything I do with empathy and my passion is justice for those wronged by others or the system itself.

Generation Why is currently working on a four part series which explores a wrongful conviction attained by faulty science. As someone who loves science, I believe we should always strive to use testing methods that are established and repeatable.

Framed: An Investigative Story is returning for a third season and I am excited for it as it delves into the questionable conviction of a man with a solid alibi. Was his alibi too perfect? Was his character the true reason for his downfall?

Marooned: Tales of the Catastrophically Lost releases an episode every two weeks and we have covered some very interesting topics such as the deaths of Lynard Skynard band members, Apollo 13, and the strange but true lifestyles of two brothers who marooned themselves in their home.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Not speaking the truth when it’s needed the most will break binds. Owning up to it and asking for forgiveness can restore them. There are no guarantees, but I fully believe that a good person will do their best to restore that bond.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that comes from standing in front of and speaking to a group of people. What turned it around for me was becoming more social. I truly have reached a point where I enjoy talking with people so public speaking has become easier. It’s an opportunity that is enjoyable and not a terrible situation to dread.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
If it isn’t then it’s very close. I have found that being me is easier than trying to be someone else. It’s also easier to manage. The one thing that might not be the real me is that when I record most of my episodes I can be pretty serious. Usually, I am pretty lighthearted and quick to make jokes when I am living my day to day life.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
These days I am definitely doing what I was born to do. It’s that feeling that what I do fits like a glove. I never had that before I did what I am doing now. As a podcaster, I record and work with audio all of the time. I love audio and collect music and old time radio shows as well as ambient soundscapes. Audio is my passion.
