Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwan Miller.
Hi Dwan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dwan Miller, and I was born and raised, as a twin, in the proud state of North Carolina. I’m a Retired Army Veteran with over 20 years of military experience and currently working as a Department of the Army Civilian at Fort Riley, Kansas. I am a self-taught professional freelance photographer and a small business entrepreneur. My passion has grown into a Limited Liability Company with an indoor photography studio in downtown Manhattan, Kansas, to serve the community better. I became the CEO/Owner of Dwan Miller Photography in February 2019.
My passion for photography derived from my love and connection with my daughters; my oldest daughter pursued photography and has now graduated college with a degree in graphics design and a minor in photography. We shared this passion daily, and it strengthened our love for photography. I became a photographer to tell a story through photos and to help others. My photography style encompasses fashion, glamour, editorial, lifestyle, and business headshots. My love for this dream motivates me to travel worldwide by providing quality photos at affordable & reasonable prices.
I’ve been published in several magazines: The Manhattan Magazine- Manhattan Kansas, The KC Voyage Magazine- Kansas City, Kansas, The Sunflower Magazine- State of Kansas, The Babe Watch Magazine- US, The Feature Magazine- International Creative Publication and the Heartland International Fashion Week Magazine- International Design & Fashion Publication.
I have collaborated with several local and small businesses; The Goolsby Restaurant, Bellus Academy- Beauty & Wellness School, Bling Glamour- Women’s Clothing Store, The Manhattan Juneteenth Committee, The Black Entrepreneurs of Flint Hills, and the Heartland International Fashion Week-Modeling agency.
My goals for 2023 are to publish a Lifestyle & Fashion Photography Magazine, write a book about photography, create a photography clothing line, and start a beginner’s photography class here locally in downtown Manhattan, Kansas. The sky is the limit. Love, Peace, and Photos.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
The road to where I am today could have been smoother. It took time to understand the mechanics behind photography and how the equipment and the introduction of light worked together. Taking photos in manual mode is differently challenging but is preferred. Editing photos is the most important diverse part of photography. It is so subjective, and I’m very critical of the process. I’ve narrowed done 3-5 presets for various skin tones to allow myself to be consistent. This has taken several years of observation, client feedback, and education from other content creators.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I love to specialize in fashion (editorial and glamour) photography. This allows me to be creative, meet dynamic people, and incorporate artistic props into the session. I’m most proud of the group editorial photo I took of three inspiring females (2- black and 1- white). We took this photo at 7:30 am on an early hot day at the Scenic Observation Lookout in Manhattan, KS. The director of the style and makeup was a local MUA- B. Michelle Aesthetics. We planned this shoot from early morning makeup/hairstyle, and it was a vision that has now become the face of the city. I set myself apart from other professionals in my style of photography. My photos are very muddy, edgy, risky, and dynamic and express emotions that other people want/need to be captured.
What are your plans for the future?
My goals for 2023 are to publish a Lifestyle & Fashion Photography Magazine, write a book about photography, create a photography clothing line, and start a beginner’s photography class here locally in downtown Manhattan, Kansas. Im currently establishing an internship with local photographers to assist with events, sessions, and administrative practice.
