Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Mfuh and Laura Nsoh-Awasom.
Hi Melanie and Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you so much for having us! My name is Melanie Mfuh and I was born in West Africa, Cameroon. I am the founder and CEO of Uzuri Closet. I enjoy dancing, drawing, cooking and traveling but most of all, my heart is in fashion.
I’m Laura Nsoh-Awasom and I was born in Cameroon, West Africa but lived in Kansas City for 13 years. I’m the COO of Uzuri Closet since 2017. Recently, I graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City business school. Over the years, I developed a passion for creating things I can call my own from braiding and cooking to making/creating designs. I love to try new things that will help me grow as an individual and with Uzuri Closet. I’m following my dreams while learning and trusting the process.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Business is a very complicated journey.
There are times when everything went as planned and other times we have to change our plans even in the middle of executing them. Recently, we had some difficulties with a manufacturer in terms of us receiving our items before the store opening.
One thing for sure we have learned from that experience is to have a backup plan because unforeseen circumstances are bound to happen.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We believe you need to take risks in order to get to the level of success you envision yourself in.
This store we opened at Oak Park Mall is a risk on its own. Before we decided to open this store, we did have a substantial amount of doubt and unending “what ifs” but we decided to move forward and pursue our dream.
It is better to take action than have regret years down the line for not taking this next step in our business.
