Conversations with Mary Kate Krause

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Kate Krause.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started with a dream. Truly, I had always thought of being a photographer as a “dream” and nothing more than that. I never thought I could do this as a profession. It was always a “dream job” way off in the distance. Then, I got married and had a baby boy. While staying home with my son, I realized I needed some sort of creative outlet for myself. I started thinking about my hobbies and things that I enjoyed doing. Not many of the things I loved to do would make a good profession and as much as I’d love to be a professional Netflix watcher…. that just wasn’t going to happen. Throughout my life, I had always had an interest in photography and it had always been something that brought me joy. With the support of my husband, I decided to follow my heart and now I get to live out my dreams every single day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This made me laugh. It’s been a bumpy, crooked, and very windy road, but gosh, it’s been fun. I don’t like monotony, but I also don’t like going out of my comfort zone, so the struggles are good for me. Here are just a few of the bumps in the road: When I ordered my first “professional” camera, it was stolen off our porch. My first engagement session (and first-ever session!) later turned into “un-save the date” photos. I’ve struggled with comparing myself to other photographers and thinking my work isn’t as good as theirs, but I’ve just learned that everyone has different styles and there will always be a photographer for everyone.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started off as a couples’ and family photographer, but have just recently started shooting weddings as well. I’m super pumped for all my upcoming weddings and love the relationship I get to build with my couples throughout their engagement and wedding day. I love getting to witness one of the happiest days of people’s lives and always hope to document it well enough that they get to relive their emotions from that day all over again each time they look at their photos. I’m always honored and humbled that people choose me to be a part of their biggest moments and I always want to help make it as special as possible. Also, shameless plug, my prices are super affordable since I am just starting to do weddings!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I hope it just continues to blossom. I love that people want to celebrate and document important moments of their lives. Lately, I’ve been loving that college seniors have started to get “senior photos” taken. It’s such a fun and monumental time and they deserve to celebrate!
