Meet Kelsy Addington of Om Is Where the Calm Is

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsy Addington.

Hi Kelsy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Several years ago, 2016 or 2017, I was working full time as an RN, raising my young stepsons with my husband, and going to school for my BSN. I experienced OCD and the associated anxiety and was just looking for a space to connect with other people and find a space to breathe and relax. I found a yoga studio where I learned yoga nidra-a deep guided meditation practice. I found relief for myself and discovered I need to teach this to other people. I found anxiety support for me and a calling to help others find ease in the wild experience that is life. I dove into studying and became a certified meditation instructor and yoga teacher. From there I developed Om Is Where the Calm Is to teach meditation and mindfulness to real world busy people-in a way that makes sense. A few years later, my husband and I adopted a teenager, our son, and that grew my passion for expanding my offerings. Having all sons, now teenagers and one in their 20s, I realized the importance of supporting men teaching them mindfulness and encouraging them to be open about their experiences. I became a certified mens health instructor. I also developed a passion for working with parents, specifically adoptive and non-birthing parents to bring mindfulness and support to this type of parenthood journey.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been busy and definitely not smooth. Raising boys, especially three boys that I met later in their lives, has been my greatest joy and one of my greatest challenges. All while trying to grow a business and work full time as an RN. Additionally, teaching mindfulness also comes with its challenges….it can be tricky to share how powerful mindfulness can be until you try it. My hope is that more people will find that they can learn mindfulness, and they do not need a ton of time to practice it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business offers meditation and mindfulness teaching as well as parent support. I offer virtual services as well as in person one on one services. Where I stand out in my teaching is that I draw from my experiences, using real world relatable anecdotes to share many of the topics I cover. I also utilize my often times dry humor to help my clients feel more at ease and have fun while learning all things mindfulness. I also have a special ability to listen to what someone is experiencing and really meet them where they are to support them in ways that they need as well as find mindfulness tools that can be supportive to them in that moment. I am most proud of my brand being a space that is accessible for real world busy people. I teach tips, tricks, hacks, and tools that you can do without a lot of time as well as powerful mindset shifts. I have offerings for just about everybody. My free offering is a weekly email called the Evening Crumpet in which I share reflections, journal prompts, meditations or a combo of the three on various life topics. I also offer a subscription to weekly video reflections+guided meditations called Morning Tea-usually based off of the Evening Crumpet. Like tea and crumpets. There’s an example of my humor. I have a weekly community space-we meet virtually once a week-we check in with each other, learn meditation or mindfulness topics, and I guide meditations. Our community is like a family offering teachings and a safe space to share, be real, and learn together. I also have an online parenting course. This is a self-paced ecourse for parents of all ages of children-even adult children! I teach mindfulness 101 and discuss how mindfulness tools can support parents in the wild ride of parenthood sharing my story of parenting my boys. And finally, I am proud to offer mindfulness coaching and support to adoptive and non-birthing parents including families that have adopted or are adopting, dads, families using surrogacy, LGBTQ+ families, and step-parents. This is a 1:1 offering in which I support these parents in their journey as I know how lonely and tricky it can be to be a parent that has not birthed their child. Think doula for adoptive+non-birthing parents.

What’s next?
My plan is to keep sharing my story, how mindfulness changed my life, and how learning mindfulness can provide a powerful shift in all of life’s adventures. Many people think they cannot meditate or be mindful…thinking that they must turn their brain off. But I want to help people learn that mindfulness is not about turning anything off, it is about being present in the moment….all moments…even when they suck. My youngest sons are about to graduate in a few weeks. This season of my life is going to be completely new to me being an “empty nester.” But I want it to be a season for me to expand and burst into the version of me I have been working toward the past several years. I feel truly called to all that I do and I hope this season allows me to keep growing and supporting people looking for a supporter and coach for whatever reason of life they are in. I also hope to reach as many adoptive+non-birthing parents as I can. My motherhood journey is starting a new chapter and I feel like it is time to support others experiencing the challenges I faced as a non-birthing mother.
