Rising Stars: Meet Sara Alvord

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Alvord.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started blogging as a creative outlet back in 2015 when I was working 60-70 hour weeks as an event manager in downtown Chicago. I realized I needed some sort of creative outlet to balance the intense stress and hours associated with my job, and I decided to start trying to make various recipes that I had found on Pinterest. I had never really been into cooking at home (I blame working in restaurants for my entire adult life for that one), but I suddenly thought it would be an interesting new hobby to try! I eventually started to document my cooking journey through terrible photos on my iPhone, which I then published to a very basic, tiny blog that I had started on WordPress.

I kept pursuing this creative outlet, constantly developing new recipes and eventually becoming more serious about the photography aspect, as well. This passion eventually grew into full-time work through recipe development, food styling, and food photography for national brands. I will never stop loving the creativity of what I do on a daily basis!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know if entrepreneurship is ever a completely smooth road, but that just makes it even more rewarding when it does work out. My biggest struggle in life is giving more of myself to other people who are pursuing their dreams rather than focusing solely on my own big dreams. Imposter syndrome is also a big struggle, and as a creative, I don’t know if that ever goes away. I am still slowly learning to believe in myself and my abilities and to fully trust that I deserve to be where I am today because my hard work and dedication have brought me here.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in recipe development for small-batch food and drink recipes. My husband and I are the only two people in our household, and we have no plans of changing that. We truly are not big fans of leftovers, so making scaled-down versions of recipes is ideal for us! My blog,, showcases all of my small batch recipes, a few family-style recipes, and includes quite a few fun cocktails, too! I’ve also started to integrate wine pairings for some of my recipes (such as risottos), and I have plans to increase the amount of wine information and pairings on my blog very soon. I also work as a food editor for a social media account in Kansas City and do freelance food styling and food photography for local and national brands.

What’s next?
In the very near future, I plan to put a ton of focus on my own brand and blog. I have big plans to transform my blog into a resource for date night in recipes, cocktails, wine pairings, and party food recipes. I never want to stop dreaming big, and can’t wait to see where this path continues to take me!
