Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Kenyon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Kenyon.

Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2018, I was getting out of a narcissistic and abusive marriage when I met Sean Forfar. Soon after, we decided to start Cakepop Bakery and it took off with our Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes inspired ketchup cake pops. We were featured on KCTV5 Morning Show. I have always had a passion for baking and cooking. and have been doing it for over 20 years. and it seems to be working for us. We live our dream everyday with our business and have been blessed with Community Support. We have experienced many struggles and obstacles over the years and have been able to overcome and push through to where we are today with endless hard work and dedication. We are always looking to collaborate with local businesses and Baking You Happy!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is a smooth road! We have faced many hurdles over the years and appreciate learning everyday to follow our passion and not give up. Our dedication everyday has been the key to our success. All entrepreneurs learn quickly how hard the first couple of years are as most businesses don’t make it. We started off slow and had a lot of custom orders which was extremely difficult as each client’s order is unique from unicorns to soccer balls and everything in between. As the first year pressed on we were getting into more commercial business’s which really had us feeling good about the future of the business because we had more sustainable income and then the pandemic hit and shoved us right back to the beginning as all the restaurants were closing down and unfortunately most never rebounded. It is very sad, but we are stronger than ever and doing everything we can to promote ourselves and other small business owners that we meet along the way. We do our best to donate to the variety of charities in our City. We don’t feel like we are in competition with other small business owners and that attitude has made way more money on both sides.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, Cakepop Bakery is pretty self-explanatory as our specialty and there is no doubt that we excel in supplying our customers with best quality cake pops in the country. What people might not know is how we use our product to promote others. Sean sold cars at Ford and was always looking for something that his customers would never forget but didn’t break the bank. With this in mind, many of our recurring customers besides obvious ones like event planners are real estate agents and other people looking to stand out in their sales positions. We are literally the most delicious business card you can receive. We are so proud of where we are today, with thousands of loyal followers. Our process destroys the competition; setting us apart with a much better quality product as our cakepops are baked fresh daily. Paired with our creative abilities from Ketchup in Cake it’s Not Just for Steak to Chiefs Super Fan status, we are always finding ways to make the parties POP! Besides don’t you think it’s time to give the sheet cakes, over iced cupcakes or blowing out candles a rest and make way for a much cleaner more fun dessert? We offer a variety of themes and designs for example….. How cool is it to have a baby shower reveal and everyone gets to find out if it’s a boy or girl at the same time? Even Zoom parties? We also offer a variety of other desserts and sweet treats that KC will love equally.

What were you like growing up?
Michelle grew up in Shawnee, Kansas and always had a drive for baking. She loves to be creative and make everything special. She loves Kansas City and everything about it. She wants to help give back to our Community and always looking for charities to help and collaborate with. She had pursued a degree in Psychology to work with kids but realized her passion was making people happy with her desserts and dishes. Her favorite quote is ~ One cannot Think Well, Love Well, Sleep Well, if one has not dined well ~~ Virginia Woolfe. She is dedicated to every culinary aspect and only desires to please more people with her unforgettable cake pops, pastries, cheesecakes, pies, appetizers and all dishes.

Sean grew up in Seaside Heights New Jersey and spent most of his working life on the same famous boardwalk as the MTV beach house and of course the Jersey Shore Show. He moved to KC when Hurricane Sandy wiped out the Jersey Shore. Although he misses scuba diving, spearfishing, surfing, boating, and all other things ocean he says he loves how clean and beautiful Kansas City is and also the unwavering supportive Community. Driving instead of traffic is a huge plus and he loves the golf course like scenery everywhere. He says living without boardwalk pizza and pork roll sandwiches has been hard, but the KC BBQ scene hits the Charts, not to mention every sports team Rocks and has outstanding camaraderie.
