Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Vieux.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for woodworking manifested when I moved back to Kansas City in 2014 after going through a divorce. I found myself struggling with anxiety and depression, so I started creating with my hands to keep myself busy. This became my therapy and helped me heal. It also helped us financially get back on our feet. I started by offering string art. I did this for some time until I met my now-husband, Brad. Brad has helped me grow my business into being able to offer so much more.
Now I focus more on laser products and personalized signs and logos. We have 5 furbabies together and our son Ryder. We spend a lot of time in the shop as a family. Hopefully one day we will have a storefront as well!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I moved back home and finally got into an apartment. I lived on the third floor. I would do the string art in my apartment. My poor downstairs neighbors were fantastic, but I’m sure they didn’t love the pounding of nailing each nail into the wood. I had limited space and tools. I would cut my boards at my parents’ house, bring them to my apartment and stain them on the small deck we had. My neighbors probably thought I was nuts.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in woodworking. Majority of our products are signs and other home decor items, but we are also known for our stove covers. I specifically love working on laser-cut signs that are 3D and more personalized to fit each individual’s home and style. I really enjoy working with clients to create something that has meaning but fits their aesthetic. I’m dedicated to being sure each person is happy with their final product.
What matters most to you? Why?
My family is the most important thing to me. Not only did The Ruffled Sunflower start off as a way to handle my anxiety, but it also provided support for myself and my son. It has provided multiple opportunities for ourselves as well. My family has always been my support system and helping me grow. Starting off by my Dad cutting wood for me while I was at work, so my blanks were ready when I got home. Both of my parents now help me out with a lot of my orders. Having their support is what has helped drive my business. Without my family, I couldn’t have done any of this. One day I do hope to have a storefront to support local makers, here in Kansas City.
