Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Mason.
Kayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my career as an engineer in construction over a decade ago. Through this experience, I was able to move across the US and Canada, meet some incredible people and learn so much about myself along the way. Halfway through my career, the long hours, travel and demanding schedule began taking a negative toll on my mind and body and I knew I needed to make a change. I had lost sight of what I wanted in life and what I was passionate about outside of work. I had disconnected from my own desires in the pursuit of what I believed was professional achievement.
When I relocated to Kansas City six years ago, there was a palpable sigh of relief throughout my body – I was home. I began to explore my interests in health and wellness and incorporate what I was learning into my workday. Through meditation, I was able to reduce my own work-related stress and separate my emotions from the work I was doing. My relationships improved and I was happier! Through yoga, I reconnected with my inner creativity that had been suppressed for so long and found my voice through teaching yoga to others. I read over thirty books in one year and gained insight on how to break old habits and patterns. I started to take the steps towards becoming the best version of myself. Since then, I have become reiki certified, studied herbalism, ayurvedic practices, plant medicine, breathwork and many other healing modalities.
I created Breathe KC as a means to bring people together to connect, learn, share intentions and start to heal their own paths. To sit in stillness and to take a conscious breath. I am so grateful to have been able to offer and share in yoga, breathwork, reiki and cacao ceremonies throughout Kansas City over the past few years. I also love to promote other conscious practitioners and am thrilled when we can come together to collaborate and see what we can co-create together!
Aside from putting together community offerings, you can find my organic Breathe Bags at The Elms Hotel Spa in Excelsior Springs (sold out online) which serve as a simple reminder to take a conscious breath. You can also find me bringing the physical manifestation of Breathe KC to life in the form of wellness airbnb stays! This has been such a passion project of mine – to create a space of rest and relaxation for others to reset and reframe their mind (hence the name A-frame of Mind Ozarks!). It has also been such a divine calling and received International praise on forums such as Yahoo and Architectural Digest. With two more airbnb’s in the works, I am continuously humbled by the support I have received throughout my journey and look forward to serving the community in an even more expansive way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road!! I am constantly riding the wave of ups and downs; big decisions, fears, self-doubt and even deeper rooted issues all show up and play they’re part in the growth process. I like to come back to the saying that growth is on the edge of discomfort and excitement. So when something arises, I just remind myself everything will be okay and that I am safe. What I have also learned is to sit with those feelings and not try to make them go away.
The main struggle for me has been TIME!! Working full-time as an engineer and pursuing multiple ventures on the side can sometimes feel like self-induced pressure and stress – which is the total opposite of what I preach! But I am human and still have years of engrained performative workaholism to unravel. Also, wanting to be inclusive and in harmony with everyone can lead to a lack of boundaries and saying “yes” to too many things.
My takeaways are to catch myself in these moments and to sit with the feeling in my body. When I honor that inner knowing and show myself love and compassion, I am able to gracefully retract from prior commitments and refill my own cup. I know that I can always lean on nature when I need to take a break and hiking has been a really supportive means for me to clear my head and get back into alignment with my bigger purpose, which is to serve and create.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Cacao has become a huge part of my morning routine and I have seen major shifts in people when we come together in circle to share this lovely drink! It is really supportive in getting the creative juices flowing, embracing more feminine energetics and expressing gratitude. I love to share this beautiful medicine in circle and offer both community events, private circles and one on one. It is not a drug – just chocolate I am happy to answer any questions that you may have with regards to Cacao and the effects you receive from anandamide (bliss chemical) and phenylethylamine (love chemical) that are found in this substance.
I am big on breathwork and love to do breathwork classes or incorporate those into yoga classes which you can also find me doing around town or on a private basis.
One of the accomplishments that I am most proud of is the 2021 VISION: Breathe Summit that I hosted earlier this year in which I brought together experts to speak on hot/cold therapy, plant medicine, energy work, akashic records, essential oils, human design, visioneering your dreams, mission-driven businesses, leading with purpose and the future of wellness. It was such an incredible group of people that came together and I plan on hosting another one in the future!
Above all else, there is nothing that makes me better than anyone else in the industry; just different. We all have something unique to offer, and if you feel connected to my path and story, I would love to be part of your journey. I recently opened up a few coaching sessions spots where we can explore a variety of things and talk through how to get clear on what you want. The best place to reach me is on instagram @BreatheKC or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
And if you’re in need of a little R&R, I am always thrilled to host guests at Aframe of Mind Ozarks which can be found on Airbnb (dates book up fast)! I invite you to follow along in our journey of creating Sustainable and Eco-friendly stays (showing the glamorous and not so glamorous moments) around Kansas City on instagram via @aframeofmindozarks.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The number one thing I tell people is that you have to be your own biggest cheerleader. No one is going to care about what you are doing as much as you, so may as well root yourself on along the way!
I really lean on masculine and feminine energetics when it comes to how I operate and it’s an easy thing you can start to look at in your day to day too.
To break it down, masculine traits are our structure, our lists, our output. And feminine traits are how we trust, flow, integrate and receive. Life is a constant dance between both. A way to think about this is in your morning routine (my favorite time of day). Let’s say we wake up, get coffee and read the newspaper everyday. Those are the things that you have structure in and you enjoy doing. A way to incorporate feminine aspects into that would be to still wake up, get coffee and read the newspaper but maybe you take a walk with your coffee or go sit outside to read, listen to your favorite song while making coffee, inviting in the little things that make it different. You still have the structure of doing the three things, but feeling out what would be fun or light you up that day is how we begin to build trust with our intuition and balance out the energies.
