Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamelah Muhammad.
Hi Kamelah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved taking pictures since my grandmother’s Kodak camera, lol but took it more seriously after losing my older brother to gun violence. While we were planning his funeral, I realized I had so many pictures so many memories. One day I had gone out and just started shooting images – this gave me solace and helped me through my grieving process. I started posting my work on social media and got so many great responses. Friends and family kept telling me to take it serious and start a business out of it. So after some thoughts and a whole lot of prayer lol I took this leap and here I am! I not only enjoy photography for myself but I enjoy helping others capture their moments and creating memories!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road but I did have a few bumps. My main struggle was pricing, especially when it comes to family, lol. But I had to learn to charge what I am worth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a local photography based out of Lee’s Summit, MO. I specialize in portrait photography which is based around family and individual sessions and also graduation sessions. I also do weddings and engagement sessions. I would have to say I am known for mainly family and individual photography. I am most proud of my editing after each shoot. For me, editing is what makes any photo pop! And the excitement and gratitude from my clients when they see the finished work. What sets me apart from other photographers is the joy that I take in making my clients happy. When capturing moments, when capturing memories, I zone out and place myself in my client’s shoes to make sure that each shot comes out the way it should. For me as a photographer, its not about the camera itself but about the person in front of the lens and the person taking the shot.
I am currently focused on a project close to my heart. This will be a photo documentary of the inner city of Kansas City, Missouri. Growing up in KCMO I have seen so many changes which is why this is so important to me. The project will focus solely on the people and the area that they live in and will give viewers the ability to see the inner city and the love I have from my eyes. Hopefully they will be able to relate, understand and know that the rose that grew from the concrete is right here in KC!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am big on reading and self-improvement so the books that I have in my collection that actually help me to do my best are The Quran, Strength finders, and Taking care of me. These three keep me grounded in my life in general.

So very proud of you for the hard work you’ve put into all that you do, don’t stop continue to reach for the stars. Stay committed the prize will come when you not even looking for it, stay focused on the details, just like anything and everything we venture into has small and intricate parts, be mindful of ALL of your surroundings, dealings, dealmakers, stay grounded to you and everything you love and cherish and everything WILL go well. Don’t get too excited just grow, grow, and grow.
