Rising Stars: Meet Joe Jurkiewicz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Jurkiewicz.

Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Creating comics in my youth caused me to pursue life in art. To put it simply, I love art. I love thinking about it, I love creating it, I love looking at it, and I love thinking about creating it. It’s the process of creating that carried me throughout my entire life. Especially in high school I would be excited to go to art class, and when I’m in other classes I was still be drawing, and that would continue when I attended community college and art school. I had the pleasure of attending and graduating from Kansas City Art Institute in 2016. I guess you can say that I’ve been painting my entire life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not a smooth road. I firmly believe there will always be struggles when you’re pursuing your goals. Nothing is easy. Everything requires determination and hard work. I’ve had dozens of gallery rejections, people turning down art sales, going through horrible jobs, but at the end of the day, I just wanted to paint. To be honest it helps motivate me even more because I knew those rejections would eventually turn into something positive. “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” – Frederick Douglass

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create complex narratives with mental illnesses involving the figure. The themes that I explore are solemn, desire, loneliness, anxiety, exaltation, and pulling influences from street art and fashion illustration. I tend to work in various mediums but I guess what I am known for are my watercolor/ink videos on Instagram and TikTok. I think it’s important for people to see your process. To see what decisions, you’ve made or how you were able to create an effect. Actions speak louder than words with all honesty.

What were you like growing up?
Besides the art. Video games (which I currently still do) and hanging out at the local park when I was a kid. I remember never wanting to leave the park cause all I wanted to do is play. I guess I never knew when I had my fill. Guess that makes me having an excessive personality.
