Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Burdick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Burdick.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to Kansas City four years ago. I had lived here for a little over a year when my boyfriend (now husband) was hosting a whiskey event in downtown Kansas City. We were trying to come up with ways to promote it. I had mentioned that we should look on Instagram to see if there was a page that promoted local events. There wasn’t and I remember thinking, “That is so strange. That really seems like something Kansas City would love.” I started the Instagram page @kclocalevents in August of 2018 with no concept of what I was doing. I had never even heard of the term “influencer” at the time. I started to read books on social media marketing and found that I really like learning about it.

At first I thought, “How cool would it be if I reached a thousand followers?”. After my first year, I had 4,000 followers. After two years, I had 10,000. Now sitting at a little over two and a half years old, I am sitting at over 30,000 followers and with every major milestone, I have been just as surprised and thankful as that first 100. When I first started the page, it was solely based on promoting events. Eventually, it grew into promoting local businesses and events. Anything you could think of local KC! I have met the most amazing business owners here and I have completely fallen in love with this city. I love that Kansas City thrives off of local support. There are so many people here that will always choose supporting a local business over a large chain or corporation. I love that even though we are technically in a city, you still get that small town, Midwest charm vibe. Everyone is your neighbor.

I made a deal with my followers this year that the moment I hit 30,000 followers, the time clock began to donate to 30 charities and non-profits within a year. Whether it be time, goods or money. I am very excited to get this part rolling!

I cannot tell you how much I love running this page and getting to know my followers. They are always coming to me with questions and I absolutely love that they trust me to make recommendations! I cannot wait to continue growing and seeing where this page takes me!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely had its trying times. There were many weeks where I wanted to give up. There were lots of times when I felt like I was putting in an effort and getting nothing out of it, but it really has been worth all of the time and effort!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run a social media platform that caters to Kansas City small businesses and followers looking to try new things. I specialize in bringing small businesses to the public’s eye that they may not have heard about. I provide my followers with local events that are happening around the city. I like to think that I am known for being an advocate for local businesses. I am most proud of the following that I have created. It’s one to have just a large number, but my followers are so supportive of me and the businesses that I support. They always are positive and willing to help out however they can. That is amazing! I think that putting others before myself sets me apart in the social media world.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to people. When I first started, I constantly messaged or emailed people for advice or tips on how to grow in this field. I was probably annoying, but who cares?
