Rising Stars: Meet Alexandria Singletary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Singletary.

Hi Alexandria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Believe it or not, AK Artistry started back in 2015 as makeup and DIY channel. I used to make a lot of home decor, furniture/crafts, and do makeup looks for Halloween, model shoots, any and everything you name it!

As time progressed, I networked and connected with a lot of people that got me into the modeling and entertainment industry and from there decided to develop my own trade in the form of self-care! I noticed that I was so busy taking care of others I was not paying attention to myself.

So, I started up a brand focused around self-care in the form of physical care for your body, business coaching to care for your business, detoxing to care for people with all-natural hair, just any and every form of self-care! Today, I operate all of my physical products online through my website, I offer virtual or in-person business coaching and social media management, along with continued vendor and networking events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! First and foremost I was self-taught, thankfully my aunt has experience with licensing and forms so she was able to give me great guidance! However, I had to do all my own research, my own footwork, and just figure it out for myself!

Some of my latest releases cater to certain physical traits I don’t particularly possess but rather have experience in; which has caused some discrimination and resentment from others. At first, as a business owner it hurts, your goal is to truly satisfy all customers. Along the way, though you realize “It’s not selfish to love yourself” and the opinions of others do not define you. I’ve built a brand on inclusion and people like that just don’t deserve a seat at the table.

From the start, I wanted to pick a service that was unique to anything else really out there but that could also be continued on a monthly subscription basis to have that continual desire for my product. As one of my mentors, Ashley Massengill once said “Find your strengths. Hire your weaknesses” and with that, I just knew whatever I can’t learn or do myself, I can find in networking or collaborating with the right team.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a small business owner of AK Artistry. Our focus is Self Care with a motto “It’s not selfish to love yourself,” We launched January 30th of 2021 with our Self-Care Kits and have since added Small Business Startup Guidance, Social Media Management, and our Loc Detox Boxes. Our goal is self-care in all forms; be it physical, mental, your business. Providing a service that helps ease your peace of mind and leaves you feeling refreshed.

I’m most proud of how much it’s grown. In less than a year, I’ve collaborated with a business in Columbia (ILAK by IAMDREA), serviced weddings, custom parties, networked in events all over the tricounty, shipped products to multiple states, and connected with so many communities and strangers its unreal.

It’s hard to say what sets me apart from others because I’m all about inclusion and welcome anyone to join me on this level and absorb the same energy, but you have to be willing to accept it. Through this whole journey, I’ve taken a lot of risks, chances, stepping out right into God’s hands, and every time, He prevails. You have to be willing to try and take those opportunities when they come knocking!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
To God always be the glory! However, FAMILY. My family has been my biggest support system through it all. I mentioned earlier my aunt Elizabeth who has a business background with her guidance on startup and licensing along with always supporting me through any endeavor!

My mom! She makes my visions come to life! She produces our t-shirts, labels, customizes our Packaging, I mean everything even our custom tablecloths for events! She saved me from a lot of hurdles and is always my biggest supporter!

My friend Cristin who was my guinea pig in the beginning and biggest cheerleader also highly maintained her Top Fan status on all my social sites, constantly sharing and supporting! My business “therapist” Laquinta helped guide a lot of my start-up ideas and was the first to hire AK Artistry for an event; the first of many.

The love of my life Marques for supporting me and every wild crazy idea this business has to offer! He’s been my model, my editor, photographer, setup crew, guinea pig he’s worn every hat and is rightful co-owner; but AK Artistry wouldn’t be anywhere near successful without his support.
