Meet Tonyae Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonyae Curry.

Hi Tonyae, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I go by the stage name, SkinnyBae Yae. I started really enjoying music at an early age, dancing and singing and rapping like most kids. I guess I just had an ear for good music and good lyricism. When I was younger around 7, I started writing poetry, literally every single day I would write at least 2 poems. I had books on books of my work from that time through teenagehood. I really enjoy it more as people would tell me how great I was and how much of a talent I had, my family and friends, my mom’s friends and coaches were all telling me I had a gift for putting words together. I knew it too because no matter what, I could always rhyme lol. I stopped writing poetry and started rapping instead when I was about 12, I met a little boy named SeVaun in my neighborhood. We grew as close friends from hanging out at the community center together and he introduced me to rap. He would rap every single day all day lol WE recorded on his boom box and everything! He was dope and he always knew I was dope too! WE would just rap and freestyle all the time and really, everything was always music incorporated lol literally at least 60% of our time was spent recording new raps on the boom box. Then one day I moved away from the neighborhood and I stopped writing altogether, no poetry, no raps, nothing, I moved to basketball lol in 8th grade. Honestly, SeVaun became my family, and no matter what happens, he got what I got and if I get where I’m headed, he got a place right there too, no lies. So yes, I hit high school and was super shy, like very shy so I would not let anyone know I wanted to rap low key ‘cause I felt like since I was so shy that nobody would believe in me and I was scared of rejection and getting made fun of, that held me back for over a decade! But now? I KNOW I’m tough. Back then, I wasn’t aware of just how special my talent is. I ended up still not really writing music until I had my 1st child, crazy thing is, I gave up on everything then to focus on my child, I thought my music dream was over because who got listen to me now? They are going to slaughter me until I met Rico Freeman! Awh man, I ain’t got enough words to tell you how I rock with Rico, that’s my boy! I met him in 2015 before his fame and before my music started to really come to light. Met him on Facebook from seeing a post he made rapping and I happened to click it and he was like one of the best rappers I’ve ever heard no lie, I hit him up like you dope lol keep going, etc. I never told him I rapped, I started showing up to his shows, etc so as we got more acquainted, I ended up doing a challenge video to a song of his called “She Tired” check that out lol but yeah, so BOOM! Video going CRAZY! Rico told me I need to take it serious because I’m talented etc. his knowledge even then before he knew what he knows now, helped me, he helped me become more confident in my music and I started releasing more challenge videos like a few of them gaining more and more support and that’s when I realized, I was the one holding myself back, the people loved me! I was so happy to see so many people I did not know literally FLOODING my inbox and comments, thousands and thousands of views it literally made me go harder and show people who SkinnyBae is. Made a HIT song with Lady Killa Tells and Shay Lyriq called Iz U Dum remix! On all platforms now, the song is STILL going crazy! That pushed me even further because the entire city loves that song and a lot have seen us perform it. I’ve been doing promo and shows, features, etc. You really gotta put in that work, I’m building my brand, showing people real lyricism. I be in ATL doing what I need to and I just write all the time, prepared to release a new album soon! Really taking my music serious and been slow with posting new videos due to 2 projects I’m working on, one solo and one joint with Deandrius who is also super talented! I’m really just looking forward to working many new artists and exclusives and bringing in GREAT music. But I promise I’m coming hard, so join me on my journey and let’s try to make music history together! That’s a long story short.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been extremely smooth. Like anything that takes hard work, you have to be trained mentally and physically, and there is a lot that comes with that. Life happens and as human beings we hit times that we are not necessarily in positions to do what we may need or want to do at that time. I’ve gone through my struggles and I had to train myself to get out of them and how to just keep going no matter what. One of the struggles many may face is getting their music to the people. That is also one of the things I had struggled with for so long.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a female rapper out of KC, I have my very own sound, my lyrics are always different and I get better with every verse. I also look quite different than most female rappers as well which sets me apart mostly.

How do you define success?
Success is obtaining a level in life that you aspire to be at. That’s pretty subjective really, success is what we make it, getting to that goal we made for ourselves and finally being able to say, “I did it”.
