Meet Shikara Wiley of Fieldsong Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shikara Wiley.

Hi Shikara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My husband and I have been collecting cacti and succulents for several years. We began propagating from our collection to sell a few plants and our business has grown from there.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Because the plants we grow are, for the most part, not hardy in our area, the winters can be hard on us. Everything must go inside for sometimes as long as six months. This can present some challenges in growing and propagating, especially as our space fills so quickly. We get creative every year, though and have always made it through.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fieldsong Farm?
My husband and I have a farm and greenhouses (in addition to both of us also working full-time jobs). We raise chickens, ducks, geese, and quail, as well as about half an acre of produce. We enjoy all of these things, but our main focus is our cacti and succulent greenhouses. We have an extensive collection of rare plants. You can often find propagations from rare these plants amongst the plants we sell. All the plants we sell are planted in terracotta or decorative planters, never plastic.

It is our goal to propagate as many of the plants that we sell as possible, as opposed to just ordering plants in for immediate resell. We are also always acquiring new species to add to our collection to propagate from. We make our own custom soil mixes to allow for the best growing conditions for our plants. Currently, you can find our plants for sale at the Made in KC Marketplace on the Plaza and the Lawrence Farmers Market. We also take special requests for succulent favors for events and arrangements for gifts. We are always on the lookout for new stores to offer our plants to as well.

Pricing:

  • Individual Plants $4-40
  • Arrangements $15-75
