Meet Shemar McConico of Inventive Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemar McConico.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hair is something that has been fascinating to me from the time I was five years old. It’s not just what I do it’s what I love. When I graduated hair school, I knew that I did not want to be considered the average black hairstylist. I decided I would go and work for salons where I could learn all hair textures. This opened me up to a completely different idea of what a stylist could be. Over the years, I gained so much knowledge of the hair industry and a hair in general that I understood I would be limiting myself by staying an employee… Eventually, the thoughts of limiting myself became strong so strong that I started to despise my job. I didn’t like going in, I didn’t like being there, I didn’t like the owner. So seven years ago, I took a leap of faith. I quit my job. I worked as a self-employed stylist for six years and last year in August, I opened my own salon.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I am an over planner. I had my business plan and goal board together eight years before I even decided to be self-employed. So by the time I got to the point of opening my business, I already had my map laid out. I knew where I was in life. I knew where I needed to go. I put the plan to work and I got there. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and mental strength to fight through when you have a goal.

We’ve been impressed with Inventive Hair, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Inventive hair is a full-service salon. We take pride in customer service and offer an environment that is family-friendly! Our ultimate goal is to provide a great salon experience at an affordable cost.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out is: Don’t look at the path that you have to take as a struggle. Struggle can bring fear and fear is the worst enemy of greatness. Instead, look at each step along the path as one more step closer to your goal. A positive outlook is so important in business as well as life. If you think you can or can’t your right.
