Today we’d like to introduce you to Matinnae Miller.
Hi Matinnae, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello & thank you for having me! I’m Matinnae (Mah-tin-nae), an entrepreneur originally from Seattle, WA and now predominantly serving clients virtually/ in the Kansas City area. I’ve dedicated myself to a life of service and helping others be better in their daily lives. I strive show up as my most genuine self and in doing so give permission for others to do the same.
My entrepreneurial journey started when I was 7. My mother is also an entrepreneur in the beauty industry. She not only allowed me to operate as her assistant growing up but also created space in her salon for me to have my first business, Small Beginnings, within her salon. My journey to styling came organically as I studied Fashion Marketing & Management formally in college, but I’ve been exploring consumerism as a shopper since Mervyn’s was open.
Growing up, money wasn’t plentiful, which challenged my ability to explore the various ways to express myself on a tight budget. In my pre-teen years, I discovered self-confidence through clothes, learning that you can wear luxe designers like Fendi with sweats from a no-name brand and make it work. Beyond my personally curated style, I remember helping my mom and aunts get dressed growing up with small tidbits of my opinions because children will always tell you the truth.
Fast forward nearly a decade, Closet 215 was born in 2012 as a capstone project during my senior year at Stephens College in Columbia, MO. This business was created to bring function to fashion after realizing my closet was a curation of pieces from all over the world and I wanted to be able to do that for my clients and customers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
It has not been a smooth road. It has been quite a journey of many starts, stops, wins, and losses, but it has been worth it because I can impact each client uniquely. One of the immense struggles on this journey thus far was losing sight of my dreams while working my day job.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I am enjoying my journey in the corporate world. I would not trade the experience, as I have met incredible people while learning invaluable lessons. Still, there is something about walking in your purpose that brings a new level of fulfillment. In the push to rediscover my purpose, I have had to overcome self-doubt and fear of failure by learning to take execution one step at a time. One of my life mottos is “take it one day at a time, even if you have to break that day down into 5-minute increments”.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Closet 215 Consulting?
