Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Turpin.
Hi Josh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the spring of 2013, four friends met over a few beers (which, as you know, is where most great ideas hatch) to talk beer: drinking it, brewing it, sharing it, and everything to love about it. Their desire to create great beer in a fun environment, and sharing that experience with all of Kansas City gave birth to the idea of Brew Lab: a place for home brewers of all all backgrounds and experience levels to improve their craft, create better beer, and have more fun doing it.
During COVID the brewing classes had to come to and end and were never resumed. Brew Lab then set its focus on making great beer, serving great food, and providing a friendly atmosphere for patrons to enjoy both. The kitchen offers a full menu complete with appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and entrees. The business offers fun things to do like Trivia & Tacos on Tuesdays and live music every Friday. It also serves as a great venue for private events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been an extremely bumpy road. Constant change, COVID, and construction in Down Town Overland Park has forced the concept to constantly adapt to ups and downs in the market. The microbrewery and brewpub scene has experienced a downturn in the last 10 years which has forced the business to focus on areas of the business to set it apart from the others. The current construction of the new farmers market has closed the street in front of the business and choked off foot traffic. The City of Overland park as been little-to-no help and the business has to continue to work on ways to generate business to keep going….but it is and plans on continuing to do so.

We are known for a unique offering of a wide selection in-house craft beer, guest beer, cocktails, elevated food, and a great atmosphere. We are proud of our beers and selection of both drinks and food. We have a loyal group of employees that has helped the business strive in uncertain times.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Running wild through the woods in east-central Oklahoma hunting, fishing and just being a boy.
