Meet Jane Nguyen of Behind The Beaüty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Nguyen.

Hi Jane, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My story started when I was 15 years old, my mom had found out that she was having kidney failure and that she’ll need to have a kidney transplant in order to feel better and live longer by the doctors. Then there goes my dad who wasn’t around to help out with my siblings and me while my mom was feeling ill so we were on our own for a while. As the oldest one out of the four children my mom have, I took the initiative to take the role of being the working big sister and the motherly role to my siblings for a while, doing so I was attending school just to make sure there were food and a roof over our heads. While doing so I was also making sure my mom was well taken care of too, then I realize that I have a passion for art while I was in art class so I said to myself why not put my art or skills onto something or someone. Then I was dating this guy whose family owns a few nail salons so one day his sister asked me if I wanted to learn and to be at the salon part-time so of course, I said yes! it was the perfect timing to learn while making some cash to help my mom provide for my siblings and me. I fell in love with having that freedom to be creative with the people I’ve met every day. It gave me so many ideas, lessons, knowledge, joy, and other important things in life. Then I saw how much I was making was the second part of the job just by doing the basics such as nail designs and helping around the salon part-time so I went ahead and pursue deeply into the nail industry world and just continue to work hard.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being in the nail industry world always has its pros and cons just like any job so in the beginning no it wasn’t a smooth road. The reasons why are you’ll have to of course attend school in order to learn about it just like anything else if you want to be license and have some knowledge in it to help make your income increase or have a decent job. While doing so I was working part-time paying for my own tuitions fees and taking care of my family. There were some struggles here and there but over time it got better because I started to learn how to juggle or divide my time for everything I’ve got going on in my life at the time. There are days where things can go smoothly and there are days where things can go wrong, but that’s how life works. “You live & you learn.” Back then there weren’t many nail salons so it was easier to learn and gain clients quickly, but now I would say it’s gotten a little bit harder because there are nail salons practically in every corner or down the streets which means competitions with the prices. For me, I believe in quality work over quantity so therefore I’ve always stayed in my own lane with the continuous to have an open mind with things and bettering myself in my work and in myself personally. When you do that with love and happiness, you’ll attract good vibes & good genuine people.

We’ve been impressed with Behind The Beaüty, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After a few years of working underneath someone in a few nail salons, I finally got fed up working long hours in the salon while trying to make a decent living off of it. it was hard because there were too many employees who were also there to make a living too so people started getting stingy with clients and customers. I decided on February 4th of 2019 to go out on my own and work for myself, be my own boss and have that freedom of creating my own schedule. Thats when I came up with Behind The Beauty! Ever since I refuse to work for someone again. I specialize in Dip powders, pedicures, manicures, gels, waxing, and lash extensions. If a client were to say what I am known for it’ll have to be for my dip powders and designs because I can get down! lol. What sets me apart from others is I’m very picky and mainly my obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to everything such as for example my shapes, paint jobs, and the little details that matter to me. It’s also the private establishment with a one-on-one time that sets me apart from the rest of the big salons, it is required to have an appointment in order to enter the establishment. I am the proudest of how far I’ve come into this industry and creating my own brand, mainly I’m proud of all the clients that have been with me for years and the newcomers for taking a leap of faith in me and my work because without them Behind The Beauty wouldn’t have gotten this far nor be here today to share the behindthebeauty family story with whoever may be reading this. Also, I’m very proud of the space I’ve created for everyone to feel safe, to let loose with their creativities, and to most importantly to be themselves. Thats why I came across to naming my business behindthebeauty because within each and every one of us there is beauty no matter the ethnicity, title, degrees, or backgrounds/stories we may have. To the readers don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith and go for your goals and dreams! It is POSSIBLE as long as you go for it and to make sure you put all you have into it; it’ll be worth it, I promise. When things or life gets tough stand up and fight for your dreams and goals because only then you’ll have a stronger chance of succeeding. The outcome of it is very rewarding because you know you did your best and gave it your all. The services I provide at Behind The Beauty: Dip powders, Gel manicures, waxing, pedicure, and lash extensions.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the journey and still do each and every day is to be kind, joyful, and do life with an open mind to all backgrounds and ethnicities because everyone wants to be heard, to be love, and to be accepted. Also, having patience and a good/maintain work ethic plays a big role in my journey too.
