Today we’d like to introduce you to Christie Merandino.
Christie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
With deep roots in Johnson County, our owners set out to open up a brewery close to home. As members of Johnson County Brewing Society and BJCP Certified Judges, they met years ago and started brewing together and aspiring one day have their beers shared by a community that they love.
In February 2019, proudly opened as Shawnee’s First Brewery with the mission to brew locally in a historic structure so that our community will have a place to gather over eclectic, flavorful beers.
In 2020, we realized we needed to brew more beer. The addition of a new tank also came with a new brewer and partner. A home-brew friend with a vast knowledge of cask beers and all things English, Sean happily joined our small family.
Our staff is small but mighty. Our bartenders range from Kansas to New Jersey, Arkansas and Arizona. They come with a wide range of knowledge and craft beer travels under their belts. Each staff member is also a Cicerone Certified Beer Server who possess the skills needed to understand, explain and enjoy beer.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think from the momentum of opening in February 2019; we had a great ride until COVID-19. We changed our business plan to adapt to the times and worked really hard to stay open. There were many times where we didn’t know how much longer we could make it, but we prevailed. We were fortunate enough to have an amazing staff that worked together. We did not lay anyone off but instead communicated to find out how we can help everyone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Personally, I am the operations manager overseeing all FOH operations. I found Kansas City when I was living in Florida and evacuated here during a hurricane. I fell in love with the city and was really happy to further my six-year brewery career with Transport Brewery. We are a community-minded brewery and love to incorporate that in our everyday business. We started a mug club, have a really popular Taco Tuesday, Trivia and donate a lot to different local charities.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Hire Smart. Find yourselves great employees that are willing to grow with your business. Sometimes the best staff are the people you take a chance on.
