Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Hackmann.
Hi Bethany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
While in my undergrad, I picked up a remote job as a marketing assistant. At the time I was balancing a full class load and a job as the Marketing Specialist for UMKC Campus Rec, so I appreciated the flexibility in a remote marketing job.
After I graduated with my degree in English Creative Writing, I put energy into picking up new clients. God closed a lot of doors when I applied to full-time jobs, but the opportunities he presented were better than I could’ve ever imagined. Eventually, this evolved from a freelancing side-hustle to a full-fledged business!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m a big fan of turning obstacles into opportunities. I used my free time during the pandemic to build my website, work with a business coach, and develop my brand. When I couldn’t get a full-time 9-5 job, God opened my mind to the possibility of being my own boss.
I think the hardest part of being an online entrepreneur is finding community. Thankfully there are lots of resources out there that help us network with others! As an extrovert, I really enjoy spending time with like-minded creatives. I meet with some of my other entrepreneur friends once a week to work together.
We’ve been impressed with Beth’s Copywriting Corner, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a copywriter for entrepreneur women who are looking to scale their businesses by improving their copywriting! I focus more on building relationships and telling a story as opposed to sales-y gimmicks. I work with women who are risk-takers, dream-chasers, and world-changers. Your story is the backbone of your biz, and I wanna help you tell it.
My specialty is definitely in brand voice since my background is in marketing. I actually just created a worksheet called the Brand Voice Clarity Worksheet that walks you through my process of refining your brand voice. It’s for sale on my website! I’m super proud of it.
My most popular service is called Fast Pass Day where I spend all day just on one person’s copy. Usually, this involves email funnels, launch collateral or website copy. I honestly have so much fun doing those. I’m not a procrastinator (that stresses me out) but I love working under pressure. And I love seeing my clients check “write copy” off their already packed to-do list.
I also do content writing – blog post copy and blog audits.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
A few copywriters are worried about AI tools writing copy for businesses, but I’m not worried about that. These tools are increasing in popularity, but I know they can’t replace the experience of working with a human who deeply cares about the success of your business. On the other hand, I think copywriters are learning to co-exist with these AI writing tools. They can be useful to check our typos or refine minor grammar adjustments.
Most importantly, I’m noticing a shift away from speaking to pain points, which has been called out as manipulative and unethical. I’m hoping for more of a transition to ethical copywriting. Popular copy practice in the past has been very authoritative and sales-y. In the next few years, I expect copywriters to focus more on humanity, consent, and clarity.
