Meet Amy John of Chalk Hearts KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy John.

Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Chalk Hearts KC was started in January 2021 in Stillwell, KS by a lovely friend of mine. She and her husband were getting ready to move and she decided to sell her company. I had previously purchased chalk for my kid’s Easter Baskets and fell in love with how beautiful and unique they were. As soon as I found out Chalk Hearts KC was being sold, I contacted the previous owner immediately and told her how badly I wanted this opportunity. I took over in June 2021 and have been having the best time creating beautiful, colorful chalk for Kansas City locals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it has been pretty smooth! Making the chalk can be a trial and error with the amount of ingredients needed and with different shapes. I have also had fun creating different colors, both bright and pastel in order to create a wide variety for everyone.

As you know, we’re big fans of Chalk Hearts KC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Chalk Hearts KC is a local chalk-making company. I work out of my home in Lees Summit, MO and make everything myself! I have a wide variety of shapes that are detailed and beautiful. A recent customer bought some for her daughters and one of them said, “mom, she doesn’t make boring chalk!”

I pride myself in making the best chalk for everyone, but especially children. I myself have two children and before making chalk, I was a private nanny for about a decade.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The previous owner of Chalk Hearts KC deserves a ton of credit. She built this company up in a very quick four or five months. She worked hard to grow this business into what it is, and I plan on taking it even further. My family has been a huge support. Even though starting a chalk business seems very random and unconventional, those who know me never questioned it.
