Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Zamora.
Hi Whitney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I come from a family of a few cosmetologists, so it’s definitely in my genetics. I did get my start in high school doing theater, I was poached by some of the seniors my freshman year as their apprentice to take over when they graduated. I did hair and makeup all four years in the theater department at Winnetonka and a lot of community theater. After graduating high school, I promptly moved to San Antonio, Texas and started cosmetology school at The Aveda Institute, which has shaped my entire career.
Over the last 15 years in my career, I knew I wanted to own my own salon. I had always imagined it to be a place that was comfortable and relaxing; somewhere my friends would want to come and hang out and where my clients imagined it as a retreat from the hustle and bustle. About three years ago, I woke up one day and decided that was the day I was just going to do it, I was at the time renting a little salon suite and I had definitely outgrown it. I talked to family and got with my mom’s boyfriend, Larry Gromer who helped me shape my dream salon. We took one of his old dilapidated buildings in Riverside and turned into the most darling salon. I never imagined it would take off the way it did, but here we are two years later and booked out for months in advanced. The salon became what I had always imagined it to be. The community around us, our friends and family have been exceptionally supportive and I’m so grateful for this experience.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing comes easy, but that’s the best way to learn. I’ve never let anyone or anything stand in my way. Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I will take a challenge and turn it into some kind of great story, ha!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have always considered cosmetologists to be artists. We are typically classified as service industry, which is valid but the artistry has to be there in order for the rest to work. I absolutely love my blondes, a high majority of my clientele is some kind of blonde. Color theory in general is my passion and I love taking a color and customizing to make it perfect for my clients. The experience I provide for my clients is what sets my business apart from others.”
What makes you happy?
Making my guests feel their best, there is something magical about making another person feel great when they look in the mirror.
