Life & Work with Talya Groves of Primarily downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talya Groves.

Talya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Your favorite showgirl turned local bandleader! Born and raised in Kansas City, I followed my stage dreams to New York City, where I got my degree in Musical Theater at Pace University. Immediately after college, I found success as a cast member in several Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. That is what I was doing up until I decided to change course, post-pandemic. It was then that I came back to my hometown and started paving my own way with my own act here in Kansas City. So, when I’m not singing lead on a cruise ship or doing an occasional regional theater gig, you can find me at live music venues all over the metro area. I’m at The Phoenix every Friday 4:30-8:30pm with my band, Talya & Her Boyfriends; as well as periodically seen at Gael’s Public House, Voo Lounge, and Night Hawk! You’ll have to stay tuned for more exciting venues to come…
I’m also available for private bookings and love bringing music to such personal and special events!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are many unique struggles that come with being a performer. The first being stamina — it is no easy feat to sing 3 or 4 nights a week for large audiences and long hours. It takes a certain level of discipline and health. Speaking of discipline and health, keeping my body in top shape to be able to sing and dance my best is always hard work.
Perhaps the biggest struggle for me was the transition from my theater background— where I was always being directed and scheduled by someone else— to being my own boss and running all the logistical aspects of booking schedule, musician hire, contracts, etc!
There are many interesting and challenging aspects behind the scenes!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d say that I pride myself in bringing authenticity and joy to every song that I sing. And I think something that sets me apart is that I keep a very expansive repertoire of songs— ranging from jazz, show tunes, old soul, pop/rock, you name it! — so there is truly something to suit every taste. Additionally, I think that my dancing and the way I use my whole body to amplify the music is something that I’m known for.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
One key to my success is that am shameless. If there is an opportunity that I’d like to explore for myself, I pursue it without fear. I’d rather hear “no” than live with own “what ifs”.
