Life & Work with Savanna of Downtown Excelsior Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna.

Hi Savanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This dream of mine started as a young girl, me and my mom always shopped downtown when I was younger and there was a store that made me fall in love with interior design and with the idea of owning a place of my own one day. I took my love of interior design online in 2015 when I bought a run down old farmhouse with broken windows and holes in the floor and decided to live in and flip it over time. I shared my journey on my blog (savannabrooke.com) which I still play on to this day. I started working for a realty company in Excelsior Springs and learned so much about entrepreneurship during my 8 year long stay there. I got a part time job at a store downtown es to try and learn the ins and outs of boutique ownership and get some extra income after my divorce. After working there for 2 years I decided it was time for me to go out and do what I’ve dreamed of for so long. When I started looking for a place to call my own, the opportunity to buy the building I was already working in came along… I took it! I went to the bank and got a loan and Solana was born. It is a Boutique, Candle Bar, Event Space and Vacation rental all in one building. The boutique came out of a passion for home decor and the event space was a great way to fill the extra space I had next door. Upstairs was already made into a vacation rental so I kept that idea going and we’ve been going strong for almost 3 years!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Business ownership is not for the weak. It has come with so many financial, mental, and physical challenges but there is truly nothing I’d rather be doing, even on the bad days! The income is never promised and it is a bit of a rollercoaster but you have to be willing to be teachable and pivot if needed. I’ve found having multiple streams of income makes this part a little easier to navigate. Highly recommend!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own Solana which is a Boutique, Candle Bar, Event Space and Vacation Rental all in one building. I’m mostly known for my home decor that I share online but I’m most proud of Solana. It started from nothing and it’s been built up into something I could have only dreamed of a few years ago. I have a unique style and my business reflects that in everything I do! I’m so thankful I get to be creative and enjoy my work everyday.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I had an interview with a producer for HGTV once! It was short lived, but it was a very cool experience!! They wanted someone who flipped houses and I’m not to that point… yet!
