Life & Work with Michelle Keraus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Keraus.

Hi Michelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Pure Barre has been a part of my life since 2014. I started as a client and quickly fell in love with the way it empowered me, not only physically but mentally. I immediately inquired about a teaching position. With a background in dance, it was an easy fit for me, but I was at a transitional time in my life and I knew I wanted more. I wanted to share Pure Barre with everyone I came across! When I learned the Northland territory was available, we jumped at the opportunity. Pure Barre Zona Rosa opened in January of 2016. Not a single soul up here knew what barre was – but that was part of the fun! We packed the studio with as many women as we could to help get the word out. Now, our team has changed a bit, our look has been freshened up, but 5+ years later, we can say that we are stronger than ever and motivated to keep sharing our love for the barre. Every woman that walks through these doors has an impact on me and our team. To hear some of their stories… their trials and triumphs breaks my heart wide open with empathy and pride. And to see our people welcome them with open arms. Well. Let’s just say that I am continually humbled by the strength of this community.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. If any business owner tells you that it is, they’re lying. For the first year and a half, I was commuting back and forth between Kansas City and Naples, Florida. To be a “hands-off” owner 50% of the time is tough. To build a team that you trust with your business – or in bigger terms- your livelihood isn’t easy. I will say however, that I got lucky. My team has never let me down. We are all human and make mistakes, yes. But beyond that, they have been the backbone of this business. It also helps if you have some business acumen and/or experience running a business. I came from the teaching side of the business, which helped in some ways, but hindered me in others. I had to change my mindset about a lot of things – and that wasn’t easy. I had to learn how to be a salesperson, as well as a marketing director, as well as a retail buyer. I also had to clean toilets and wash windows. It surely wasn’t the glamorous job that I had it mapped out in my head to be! Owning a business has many perks and I wouldn’t trade what I do for the world… but it’s hard. And it ain’t for the faint of heart.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Pure Barre’s tagline is Lift. Tone. Burn. – because we specialize in doing exactly that. Our claim to fame is our uber-efficient way of working every muscle in your body to the point of exhaustion. You know you’re working hard enough when your muscles start to shake – in which case – we like to say “shaking muscles are changing muscles!” Using nothing but a ball, a double tube and light weights, we have figured out the formula for strengthening the body while toning and tightening those common trouble areas for women. Our low-impact movements mixed in with high-intensity energy will find you shedding inches within the first ten classes – assuming you are coming to class regularly and doing the movements to your full potential. However, you CAN fake your way through a barre class. That’s where your mental strength comes into play. If you focus on that mind-body connection, you can take your work to a deeper level in which case you need no equipment at all, as barre can be done with only body resistance. But you have to think about nothing else for 50-minutes. This practice alone is so good for women and their self-care. We are so busy in our day to day worrying about everyone else that often we get pushed to the bottom of the list. So barre is basically therapy. But thousands of dollars cheaper. You’re welcome.

Pricing:

  • For new clients, we offer one month of unlimited classes for $99!
  • After that, you can stick with unlimited for $139-$159 per month.
  • Or do 8 classes per month for $109/month or 4 classes per month for $59.
