Life & Work with Michael Sublett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Sublett.

Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a former first responder with C-PTSD. I purchased my first camera to help me recover from trauma. The idea was to document my journey as a PTS survivor. I fell in love with photography and the creative outlet it provided to let me focus on telling a story or expressing emotion with images. . The new passion awoke old passions. From a young age, I was always writing. My first stories were for my mother. I did all to bring her joy. Later in life, I had moved away from writing to concentrate on providing for a family. Discovering storytelling through image stirred up my love for writing and the two naturally merged into a love for filmmaking. Bringing my stories to life is an amazing rush. I’ve just started this new leg of my journey and I’m excited about where it may go. I will never care about being famous, I just want to make the stories live.

We were the official photography for Kansas City Pride 2021.

I am also very excited about where my business is headed. We have several new photography and film packages coming out that we feel great about.

My greatest joy is working with so many great clients. I’ve covered music venues, political and sporting events, and even food reviews, but my favorite is working for charities and non-profits. Promoting those great causes with my work is icing on the cake.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up I was given a set of expectations. Grow up. Get Married. Start a family. Work for a great company. I met all of those expectations.

What I did not allow for my life was the pursuit of my creativity. The struggle came in the form of giving myself permission to take that leap into my business. I struggle with the fear that I started too late. That is what motivates me to constantly learn and to always be working towards improvement

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Massev Productions is a full-service photography and video/film production company. It is very important to me that my clients are completely satisfied with our work. I think it’s very important that the client feels heard and is a full member of the creative process. This approach sets us apart from others and helps obtain the goal of complete client satisfaction.

From our founding until very recently the company’s focus has been on standard photoshoots. In the last year, we began branching out into filmmaking and other genres of photography, coming away from the standard portrait sessions and wedding events.

Our video/film production is full service. For music videos, for instance, the client provides the music and concept. We find the location, write the script, hire actors (if necessary) and deal with permits.

We are looking forward to unveiling new projects soon. One project I am most excited about is The Legacy Project. It helps family members document the memories and the lives of loved ones.

I am most proud of the relationships I’ve formed with my clients. One-time projects with musicians, venues, and producers evolved into lasting friendships leading to other great projects.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes. Always put people before profit. We have a comprehensive COVID compliance protocol that guarantees the safety of both crew and client. Most clients were understanding and appreciative of our COVID compliance policy.  Protecting lives is always the priority.

Further, Art will always find a way. The pandemic lent the perspective that life should be lived to the fullest. That was a real instigator for me to move the company to new areas of creativity.
