Life & Work with Leandra Newman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leandra Newman.

Hi Leandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to hair school twice when I was 21 then when I was 26, I finished and graduated took my cosmetology test twice I failed the first time and at the time, I was an assistant for a great hairstylist and she showed me the ins and outs of being a hairstylist and encouraged me to try again so I got my license and went to work at a barbershop with seven barbers and I was the only stylist they were welcoming and easy to work with then I left with one of the barbers and we got our own shop it was ok but it wasn’t what we really wanted so we only stayed one year then I went and worked with one of the other barbers who I currently work with now and we’re like family I got to where I am today by just promoting, trying to keep my customers happy and staying dedicated to my craft I love what I do and I love making my clients feel beautiful.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth ride when I went to hair school the 2nd time. I was really struggling I mean, I was car-less I had to take the bus to school most times I was in a bad relationship; I was even homeless for a couple of months that was the toughest time of my life but I kept praying and I keep my faith and I knew God had a plan for me and I made it through.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So I’m probably known for color, silk presses, and weaves (lace fronts, closure installs). I am most proud of winning hair shows. I am 2x champ for show up and show out I love putting a show together what sets me apart is I do almost everything I can do a weave I can cut, I can color, I can do short hair I can do you a ponytail or I can even do a couple of braids pretty much if I see it I can do it.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never quit keep going for more if that’s what you want sky is really the limit.
