Life & Work with Lauren Cimpl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Cimpl.

Hi Lauren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Kansas City native and moved away for college and a number of years after. While living in cities like New York and Chicago, I was introduced to a variety of new & different fitness studios and class formats. When my husband and I moved to Kansas City recently, we noticed that while KC has many fitness studios to offer, there wasn’t as much of a variety as we’d seen in other cities. I heard about Anna Kaiser & AKT while in NYC, and Anthony & I learned of the opportunity to bring AKT to Kansas City. What interested us with this opportunity was combining our shared love of health and fitness with our interest in being part of the business community here in KC. As we learned more about AKT, we got more excited about the opportunity! One of my favorite aspects is the continuous change in class content – there is esentially new class content every week, so members won’t get bored or burnt out on the same class, and both your mind & body remain engaged. It also helps that the workouts are fun! Another important aspect of AKT Leawood is the community being built. At AKT Leawood, we want to build a strong & inclusive fitness community. I know it can be intimidating to try a new workout, we want to support our members’ fitness journeys, and our trainers can assist with modifications to the workout as needed. AKT Leawood wants to help its members meet their fitness goals, feel supported, and have fun doing it! I’ve personally missed in-person fitness classes amidst the COVID pandemic and am excited that we’re able to offer in-person classes to build this community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with anything in 2020-2021, opening AKT Leawood had some obstacles. Anthony and I were committed to opening AKT at the onset of 2020, but the COVID pandemic delayed everything. We were reviewing our location’s lease when shutdowns started. The ramifications of this pandemic delayed our original opening timeframe of about one year. However, I’m an optimist and see that there are positives from the COVID challenges – improved cleaning processes, a recognized importance of human interaction & community, and an overall focus on one’s health.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
AKT is a full-body workout that combines cardio dance intervals with strength and toning. Our classes combine the best of fitness, integrating interval, circuit, dance, and toning into the most comprehensive program of energetic and fun workouts! We are a community of supportive, energetic, and welcoming trainers, staff, and clients. AKT is a unique combination of toning, interval, circuit, and dance-based workouts, with new original programming created every three weeks. We offer four signature classes:

1. DANCE alternates between choreographed dance sections and short strength intervals.

2. BANDS alternates between functional cardio and longer strength intervals as members perform sports-based exercises with the stability of a box.

3. TONE pairs full-body strength with isometric movements to burn out large and intrinsic muscles on every plane of motion.

4. CIRCUIT combines plyometric full-body power exercises with medium weight compound strength movements in 30 seconds and 15 seconds intervals.

We also offer an INTRO class for those new to AKT.

What matters most to you?
A supportive & engaged community is our goal at AKT Leawood! I know firsthand that this is a challenging yet fun workout; members will see results from regular practice at AKT. Health and fitness is important on a personal level, and I foresee AKT as a place to build a supportive community for members – to feel connected, engaged & encouraged, to their reach health & fitness goals, and ultimately to have fun!
