Life & Work with Latoya Marsh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Marsh.

Hi Latoya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2018 in the last semester of school I started posting makeup looks of myself on Instagram. In each post, I would always tag the city I live in which at the time was Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a bunch of makeup-related hashtags. I started to get messages asking if I did makeup on other people. I said no to the first few persons that asked them I decided to make a website around June after I finished school and made a post on the Facebook marketplace and Instagram note-taking appointments and I got my first clients that same month. I even got my first bridal party that month of 12 persons, which was kinda crazy to me never I literally just started doing makeup. I then moved to Kansas City in December of 2018 where I got my first celebrity client Angela Rye from CNN it wasn’t right away it took me two months before I started getting bookings. But in February of 2019, I got an email from Angela’s assistant saying she will be in Kansas City that week and that she saw my page wanted me to do her makeup. I honestly didn’t know who she was but I was very nervous to do her makeup. That was a fun experience though. That was the start of my makeup journey in Kansas City.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me as a makeup artist. Like I stated earlier when I first started I got clients really quickly, but moving to Kansas City it took me two months to get my first client. There’s also the struggle for me between the slower months and not being as busy as much as I would like to be.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say I’m super creative not just being a makeup artist But, I also enjoy being on social media and working as a micro-influencer on creative projects with some of the biggest beauty brands in the makeup industry like RileyRose sister company to Forever21. I would also say that s one of the things I’m proud of because I use to always go makeup shopping in rileyrose in Minnesota they had a store at the mall close to so I would always be in there buying makeup and they had all the indie Instagram makeup brand in there that you normally had to get online so I really love going to that store and to be working with them on a campaign was crazy to me. I also love creating mini d.i.y. videos for TikTok about home decor. I think what sets me apart is that I’m such a multi-facet person, not to toot my own horn but I’m kind of good at a lot of things in a creative aspect, I’m a curious person so if I see something that interests me for example pottery, I’ve recently wanted to go to a pottery class because it seems cool to me to create stuff from clay, I don’t know kind of random but it’s so cool that you’re able to create these beautiful pieces from that mess

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would say my close friends Stephanie, Danique, and Isha also pushed me to be more consistent with posting my makeup looks on my Instagram which led to me having all these great experiences so shout out to them love them for that. Because it’s really easy to start questioning and doubting yourself so having good support from my friends definitely helped me to be where I am today.
