Today we’d like to introduce you to Kesia Stevenson.
Hi Kesia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
A little background on me, I am 28 years old, born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. I am a Central High School Alumni and I received my bachelor of science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Business Management from University of Central Missouri in 2015. During school, I worked for our university’s school store and worked seasonal jobs in retail fashion during winter and summer breaks. At the time, I wanted to intern in retail management and after graduation participate in a Management In Training program. Over the past six years, I’ve worked in finance and now I am an Escrow Closer for a title company. I am also a notary for the State of Missouri, resume writer and content creator.
The name “Pink Trunk” derives from one of my favorite colors and my favorite handbag style. My mission for my brand is to provide style options for everyday work, brunch and date night at an affordable price. I want women to feel like their best selves when wearing something from me.
I created The Pink Trunk in January 2019 out of faith and determination. As mentioned above, I have a background in retail and I love shopping. Women gravitate towards me because of my style and my welcoming energy. People do not mind asking me where I buy certain items and I do not mind sharing the details, especially when a discount is involved. I figured out that I wanted to turn my hobby into a profession. After researching the internet, my options and how to get started The Pink Trunk became an LLC in March of 2019. I am continuously growing and learning something new everyday. I’ve gotten this far by asking questions and participating in events with vendor opportunities.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think my biggest challenge is not knowing something. There were times I purchased inventory that was terrible, signed up for events and did not know all of the details. My first year of entrepreneurship was rough. I strongly believe in the saying, “if you know better, you’ll do better”.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are an online handbag boutique, but we also sell women’s apparel and accessories. We are mainly known for our purses and our most popular accessory, Boob Tape. I am most proud when people compliment the quality of our items and how much they love their new purse or how I made them a believer with using Boob Tape. What sets The Pink Trunk from others is that we do not offer the typical clubwear attire. I wanted to provide style options for brunch and date night types of events that women can still feel confident and classy in.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think being a business owner is one of the biggest risks you can take. In the beginning, you can map out who your target audience is, you may think you know they’ll like this item and it doesn’t sell. Betting on myself and putting many, many dollars into this business is the most riskiest thing I’ve ever done.
