Life & Work with Katie Payne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Payne.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We’ve moved 12 times over the span of my husband’s 28+ year Army career. Three of those moves brought us to Fort Leavenworth, KS. The Kansas City area quickly became like our hometown. It wasn’t a hard decision to stay in the area after my husband retires from military service.

In 2012, we purchased a home. We lacked experience in buying houses since we had always lived in post quarters and it felt daunting. It was during that time that I became interested in real estate and passionate about helping military families buy or sell their homes. I got my real estate license in 2019, not long before Covid hit and really shook things up. While I love helping anyone with their real estate needs, I understand the challenges military members face and I enjoy doing what I can to make the process easier.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The shutdown across the country made showing homes more challenging. Buyers moving to the area were not able to travel to see homes. Many sellers were understandably concerned about people going through their homes. Families who were scheduled to move to a different duty station were delayed. While housing was considered key and essential, there were obstacles to overcome.

As a new agent, I was learning so much from just being around the other agents in my office. As everyone shifted to working from home, it became more difficult to observe and learn from established realtors. I had to find new ways to reach out and connect with clients, other realtors and the community. It has stretched me and I believe I am a better for it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed Realtor in Kansas and Missouri. I specialize in residential real estate and I work predominantly with military members and their families. This is a new career for me. I was a stay-at-home mom for over two decades. I loved being home with my four girls and do not regret that decision. I am very proud that I have shown my daughters that I am capable of owning a business and starting a career at this point in my life. I am dedicated to providing exceptional service to my clients. To be entrusted with helping them to make their biggest investment is humbling and exciting.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love football and the Chiefs are an amazing team to cheer for. We love Kansas City barbecue, midwestern culture and the four seasons. We’re centrally located to our family and friends that span the country. There are tons of fun things to do, from museums to West Bottoms First Fridays to great shopping and restaurants. And your housing dollar goes pretty far here. The two weeks of really cold temperatures and the allergies that come in the spring are my least favorite things about our area, but hey, no place is perfect, right?
