Life & Work with Jenn Schouten

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Schouten.

Hi Jenn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Quite a few years ago, I learned about how highly toxic the beauty industry is and felt a need to change the way I work and the types of coloring services I offer my clients. My business quickly outgrew my salon suite with the demand of clients wanting to choose safer products for themselves. I decided to open a salon dedicated to disrupting the industry and offering heart services in a safe environment.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One big obstacle would be opening a salon in the middle of a pandemic. Opening dates were constantly being pushed back and the rules quickly changing were definitely a test to being able to persevere. I also think that being a single mom put a little pressure on my finances during that time along with figuring out a way to balance it all. I have a really great support system and without them, I’m not sure I could’ve survived it all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a stylist, I’m known for blonding, balayage, and curls. With 25 years in the industry, I’ve done nothing but grow and learn how to care for different hair types. I have a specific passion for curly, coily, and kinky hair as well as hand-painted balayage that creates dimension and gorgeous lived-in color that’s easy to maintain and grows out perfectly.

As a salon owner, I’m mostly known for shaking up the industry in multiple ways. At Elevate, we use low-and-non-tox everything from our lightener to our finishing spray and everything in between. We’re also a Green Circle Certified salon, meaning we do everything we can to close the loop of any products by reducing, reusing, and recycling. We want to push for an industry that is more sustainable, more Earth-friendly, and safer for everyone. We also have made a push away from gendered services and instead charge hourly allowing our stylists to be paid fairly, eliminating tipping completely, and ensuring there’s no rushing through any client.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Elevate Organic Hair Salon has a special interest in helping Trans individuals who are transitioning explore their style in a space that is safe, affirming, and welcoming of all. All hair is good hair and we want to be a salon that holds space for anyone to be creative with their look with the freedom to change it up if they feel like it.
