Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am really into fitness and health. A little over two years ago, I had three different sports injuries and could not find a gym that would be able to cater to my ailments. I started researching different exercises I could do, and HOTWORX popped up on my google search. To my surprise, there was not one in the Greater Kansas City area. I called the Franchisee Recruiter and opened the Lee’s Summit location two years ago. I was the first one in the Kansas City area and the state of Missouri.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a new business (that no one has ever heard of nor used our service) was the first challenge. We had to brand HOTWORX in a new market. We did A LOT of B2B marketing, social media, videos to explain our concept and studio. Another challenge was staying open during/after COVID. We had to close for close to two months while still marketing our studio and retaining employees. We did end up retaining all of our employees, which I am thankful for because we have the best team. Also, our layout and studio concept (ability to work out alone in the sauna) really helped us stay open. People could work out without being around or close to anyone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I come from a sales/recruiting and real estate background. This was my first gym business. I have really enjoyed owning a gym/studio and have met so many great people who live in Lee’s Summit. It was important that I open a studio in my community before any other location.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I feel that networking is a great way to meet new members in your community and promote your business. We have found The Chamber of Commerce to be a good networking group.
