Today we’d like to introduce you to Deeryka Lora.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I initially began braiding occasionally as a hobby. It wasn’t until 2021, when I had my youngest daughter that I decided to braid full time. Thanks to the pandemic, it made transitioning to a full-time braider very easy. After a few months of full-time braiding, I noticed I was bringing home three times the amount of income I was working a full-time job.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I always wanted to be my own boss but the “what if’s” definitely kept me from going out in the limb. Oddly enough, I haven’t encountered many if any obstacles.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a braider who not only braids but also am on the journey to mastering sleek ponytails as well as eyebrow waxing and fill-ins. I am most proud of my ability to adapt and being willing to actually try. One thing that sets me apart from others is that my prices are very reasonable and I always listen to my clients and their expectations of me as their stylist.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was growing up attempting my hair journey. As a young child, my grandmother would let me “experiment” on her hair being that I didn’t know too much of what I was doing. One day she told me to cut her hair. At the time, she had a small Afro and just wanted me to trim a little all around. Well instead of a small trim all over, I cut it really short in one spot. There’s a million ways she could of reacted but instead she praised me for the good job even though we both knew I went a little too far this time…
