Life & Work with Debra Roark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Roark.

Hi Debra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Spirit Life began as a dream deferred from college. Growing up, I was always interested in sports and fashion. I eventually went on to college to pursue a degree in fashion merchandising. After becoming a mother, I soon shifted my focus to parenthood and becoming the biggest cheerleader for my children. While attending a sporting event for one of my kids, I was introduced to screenprinting. From there, the rest was history. Spirit Life, formerly known as 24/7 Spirit & Sportswear, was formed shortly after. What started as a small screenprinting business in 2010, with a team of one, has grown to expand to include sublimation, embroidery services and two additional staff members. As of 2020, we have formally launched and expanded into event planning and hosting.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When the pandemic hit, I was nervous about the likelihood of Spirit Life being able to continue on. I took a leap of faith in the fall of 2020, as I started to test the waters and launch two projects – Print N Sips and Vendor Markets. After receiving such good praise about the events, I decided to upsize into a bigger space. Although it has not always been easy, we have found a good amount of support for our products and services across the board. In the wake of community unrest and the global plight of Covid, more people have reached out to me and my business to help. This has given me a sense of renewed faith as a Black Woman in business.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love that this has allowed me to continue to be creative and pair many things that I love together. I am family-oriented and enjoy working with other families to bring their visions together – whether it is for graduation or family reunion apparel/gifts or it is hosting a ‘Print N Sip’ for small groups to come and have a good time together. Spirit Life has been a huge part of my life and thankfully has been able to make a small impact on countless others.

What does success mean to you?
Staying relevant. Word of mouth is my biggest advertisement, repeat customers, open to learning more for growth.
