Life & Work with Cynthia Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Thomas.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My grandfather Joseph J Dasta start Mission Bowl in 1956. He raised a family of six (four children) at 5399 Martway, mission, Ks 66205 until 1989 when Michael & Beverly (Dasta) O’Donnell purchased the location from her family and began running it.

In 1989, I came to work for my parents from college and we continued to run the location at 5399 Martway until April 3, 2015. I personally started working for my family and continued up the “ladder” from snack bar to league secretary to General Manager of two facilities starting in 2004 when we purchased our second location at Mission Bowl Olathe 1020 S Weaver, Olathe, KS 66061. We are now on our fourth generation of family members working in our Olathe location.

In 2015, we had a fire at our Mission location and since then and through much litigation, we now only have one location located in Olathe, Kansas.

We have managed to stay successful through a fire, family medical issues, covid and so much more and we are finally coming out the other side. We have dedicated bowlers who have managed to keep our doors open, our bowling center successful and fun for a ton of local families and bowlers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been easy. We have been through bankruptcy in 1989, A fire in 2015, Covid in 2020 and now a lengthy lawsuit in 2021

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I personally came home from college to help my family through some financial issues in 1989. I have worked every position within the company and in 2017, I finally became part owner of Mission Bowl. Through all of this, I have married my childhood sweetheart Randy Thomas who started working for my grandfather at the age of 13. We have raised two children within the walls of Mission Bowl even so much as having beds and cots for our children to sleep in when we had to work into the evenings.

Through working for Mission Bowl, I have continued with my education and in May of 2021, I finally graduated with a degree in Business management. I specialize in our social media and league retention program. I am most proud of the fact that even though things happened along the way and plans got changed, I have maintained a well ran business that is growing even in today’s climate. I completed college at 50 and I was able to show my children that no matter what lies ahead and what the road looks like you need to continue on the path, no matter how long it takes for you to reach the goals.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I wish I knew that it was ok to ask for help. To work with others inside of our industry as they are not the competition but the ones that will help you succeed in the business ventures. Some of the best ideas, marketing information and creative ideas have come from others within my industry.
