Inspiring Conversations with Chrissy Zemencik of Cake Loft

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Zemencik.

Hi Chrissy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to be in culinary, as I grew up in the kitchen with my mom. I quickly developed a love for baking, and really started to focus on that and develop my skills as a teen. I was lucky enough to work a wide range of hospitality-related jobs and learn from amazing mentors inside the classroom as well.

In March of 2018, just a couple of years out of high school, I established my business Cake Loft LLC, and have been absolutely blessed with the whirlwind of a journey that it has been. Since then, I have graduated from Johnson County Community College with an Associates in Food and Beverage Management, as well as a Baking and Pastry Certificate, and transferred to Kansas State University’s Olathe Campus to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, with which I will graduate this December- yay!

I started off with small orders of cupcakes for graduation parties and quickly added layered cakes, numbered cakes, french macarons, cinnamon rolls, gourmet cookies, sugar cookies, and more, and we can’t forget Hot Cocoa Bombs! I have been extremely fortunate to partner with other local businesses who have helped me grow not only as a business but also as a professional.

Over the last three and a half years, I have slowly been expanding what I offer, and really focusing on making my creative signature. I want all of my items to be unique, and something that you can’t get from just anybody. Of course, there is absolutely no way that I would be where I am today without the help of my family and friends, both local and afar.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, definitely not, but then it wouldn’t be fun, would it? I thrive off of a good challenge, and I would like to think that I usually have a good sense of humor about it. The biggest challenge has honestly just been finding a balance, in every aspect. I had to figure out when the right time was to go from working full time to part-time, and then from part-time to solely relying on myself and my business. There’s simply no clear-cut answer for that.

As my business grew, I knew that it was my end game, but there are always peaks and valleys, so it was always difficult to know when the right time was. I have also always been a full-time student during this journey, which just seems crazy. In a way, it has been really beneficial because I can build my work schedule around my classes, but during a busy holiday season and a heavy finals week, it can definitely be stressful. I am really excited to see what I will do next once I don’t have this class load to worry about, too.

I have also, unfortunately, had a few sleepless nights. I can’t say I don’t know any bakers who haven’t pulled a few all-nighters, but a second oven or some extra counter space wouldn’t hurt, you know? Honestly, though, I’ve been lucky enough to have a great support system that has helped me push through these struggles, and I have always come out of the other side with a little more knowledge.

If there were never any bumps in the road or mistakes, I wouldn’t have learned anything all this time.

We’ve been impressed with Cake Loft LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cake Loft is my baby, and I say that a lot. I currently am a one-woman show, with the amazing support of my mom, sister, and some of the most amazing friends in the world. I am a from-scratch, home-based bakery in Olathe, and absolutely love being a part of all of my customer’s events, whether they are birthday parties, weddings, baby showers, gender reveals, simple get-togethers, or more.

I am super transparent, and what you see is what you get. I absolutely adore getting to know my customers, which is why I love doing cookie classes, macaron classes, and so many events and pop-ups. Some of my most popular items are my number cakes, which are always fun and customizable, my gourmet cupcakes, my french macarons, and my hot cocoa bombs- last year I made 10,000 because my customers are THAT amazing.

I am most proud of this dream that I have built from scratch, especially at such a young age. I am a highly motivated and hard-working person, so for the past three and a half years I have just kept my head down and went to business. Now, looking back at where I started, versus where I am now, it’s insane to see the changes. It is almost hard to believe that I did this, and I get so filled with pride, joy, and excitement. Any time I start thinking about what I have done, and what is to come.

I want readers to know that I am here, and I am excited to be a part of their events! I do tons of preorders and pop-ups where you can swing by and grab just a small treat, so you don’t always have to custom order something if you want to try anything out. I also offer private classes if you have a small group and just want to have a fun night. Also, I want everyone to know how appreciative I am of them on this journey so far.

There is absolutely no way that I would be where I am without the friends who first trusted me with their graduation orders, and then told their friends or anyone else who has found me on social media and decided to reach out and give me a chance. Every order has helped to pay for my schooling and allowed me to keep building my dream, and it’s just so wild to be so young and doing exactly what I want to be doing.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
First, check out my social media sites! I am on Facebook and Instagram as Cake Loft LLC and @ChrissysCakeLoft. My social media pages primarily serve as my portfolios, as it is the easiest way to see a lot of my past work. I also play lots of games and do giveaways on them, so be sure to keep your eyes out!

For all custom orders or inquiries, the best way to get in touch with me is to message me on my Facebook Page (Cake Loft LLC), or via email. My auto-reply on Facebook will prompt this, but the fastest way to get the most accurate pricing quote is to have an idea of what you want, and let me know the date, item(s) you’re wanting, flavors, colors, designs, any inspiration pictures you have, and quantity/number of servings.

I do my best to get back to messages within 24 hours M-F, and all messages from the weekends are returned by Monday afternoons. I also have a preorder site that I regularly update with new items every week, which has all the pickup information on there-

  • Custom Layered Cakes- Starting at $50
  • Custom Sugar Cookies- Starting at $30/dozen
  • French Macarons- Starting at $27/dozen
  • Gourmet Cupcakes- $21-27/dozen
  • Hot Cocoa Bombs- $3.50-7
