Inspiring Conversations with Abigail Fry of AbbyGXHair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Fry.

Abigail, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist from a very young age. I grew up going to our family’s long term hairstylist. I absolutely loved going to the salon and watching all the girls get their hair done! Ever since then I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. I absolutely love getting to help women feel even more beautiful!

I graduated from Lee’s Summit North High School in 2024 with both my diploma and my Cosmetology License. I finished the majority of my credits my junior year in preparation for being at Herndon Career Center all day my senior year attending the Cosmetology Program. My mom informed me in middle school that Herndon has a Cosmo program and helped me reach out to my counselors to set up my schedule in order to be able to go my senior year. The Herndon Cosmetology program is an extremely competitive program to get accepted into; I had to work hard to have great attendance, grades, and recommendations to get into the program.

I graduated high school and cosmetology school at 17 years old and began my career working in a salon. With my background in working social media for my high school, as well as working on the Yearbook Staff, I had an understanding on how to work social media in order to promote your business. I first created AbbyGXHair in 2024. I sat for my State Boards on my 18th birthday- and passed!!

Straight out of school I knew I wanted some more hands-on learning with today’s techniques and practices. I reached out to lots of salons in the area and one took a chance on me and took me on as a “Co-stylist”. A Co-stylist works hand in hand with the Lead Stylist watching, learning, and practicing. I learned so much about how to succeed behind the chair. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my salon owner. With that being said, I absolutely would not be here with our the support and love of my family, specifically my parents.

As an 18 year old hairstylist, you’re faced with numerous choices on where to start your journey. I chose booth rental straight out of school! I love having control over my business. It ended up being the correct decision for myself and here I am a little over a year later with two more certifications under my belt- Spray Tanning and Hand-tied Extensions.

If you told 6 year old me that I would be here at 19 years old, owning my own business as a hairstylist, I would have laughed at you! Maybe in a few more years, 6 year old me can have her dream come true of owning her own salon.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With being such a young stylist, there are many people who doubt you, and your abilities. My biggest piece of advice is to always believe in yourself- nobody’s path is the same.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about AbbyGXHair?
I specialize in making women feel even more beautiful! I absolutely love offering color, extensions, treatments, and haircuts!!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m so proud of being a 19-year-old hairstylist with her own LLC and booth renting straight out of school. I work hard for my clients and if there is something they aren’t loving with their hair, we will make their hair dreams a reality. In today’s world that’s not very common, however, it’s a common part of my business that I work hard to make my girls happy!
