Hidden Gems: Meet Tristan Carlson of KC Tiny Greenhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Carlson.

Tristan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
There is nothing like starting up a small business during a global pandemic. And like many of the other artists and makers we have met over the last year and a half, we spent the time at home making our hobby into our business. Fueled by his retail background and passion for plants, it had always been a dream of Austin’s to have a plant store of our own, and a few months before the pandemic sent Kansas City into lockdown, we had found a fellow plant lover who shared our dream. We started out by operating out of our 200 square foot greenhouse, which is where we get our name, KC Tiny Greenhouse. When covid hit, the ideas we had for building our little business had to shift. We still wanted to find a way to bring plants to the awesome KC plant community, so we started doing a monthly subscription box for plants! The KC Tiny Plant Box really helped us get our name out there and connected us to so many great people who have become loyal customers and close friends. From there, we continued to grow by bringing in local artists, connecting with other new businesses, and doing pop-up events around the city. Now, with the new space, we are so excited to be housing more local artists, more plants, and many more plans for the future!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pandemic aside, just learning the ins and outs of running a small business and keeping up with the pace is a challenge.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about KC Tiny Greenhouse?
Plants and local goods are what we are all about! When it comes to plants, we want any plant lover to be able to come into our shop and find something they want. From common house plants to rare aroids, we try our best to bring unique plants to the KC area. As for art, one of the best parts of having our new space is that we have been able to expand the number of local artists and makers that we carry in the shop! We love having the opportunity to promote people’s dreams and passions by selling their products in our store. In addition to what you can find in our store, we also offer plant consults, repotting services, installations, and workshops on everything from houseplant care to pottery.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We love how KC shows up for local businesses. KC has so many awesome small business because people take pride is shopping local and supporting their city.
